Top 7 Ski Resorts to Travel and Ski

The snow, the slope, the accommodations and the scene, or lack of it, are the factors to be considered when selecting which ski resort is one of the top 7 ski resorts to visit. Some ski-enthusiasts are looking for ski resorts that cater more to the "after the slopes" party scenes, some want ski resorts that are more family orientated, while others are looking for more remote ski resorts in secluded, backwoods hideaways with virgin powder trails to ski.

Hundreds Of Ski Resorts to Choose From

Each ski area is unique

There are presently hundreds of well-known Ski Resorts around the globe and hundreds more of lesser known ski resorts. Picking the top 7 ski resorts was a difficult decision as each is unique in its own way. You can do a search yourself for the top 7 most sought after ski resort areas and find many different opinions as to the best places to go where you can enjoy the thrill, the rush and the challenge of winter's snow. These are the Top 7 Ski Resort areas that I picked that I think should not be missed if you are an avid skier. Even if you are not, the travel to these awesome places would be lasting memories you cherish always.

1. Stowe Mountain, Vermont

Eastern United States

Stowe Ski Resort is mother of all the Vermont Ski Resorts. Located in the Eastern US, there are two Ski areas at Stowe: Spruce Peak and Mount Mansfield. It has the most picturesque ski resort in the area. It possesses the traditional New England lure and has one of the largest vertical drops. The vertical in Vermont is nearly 2000 feet! Many of the lodgings have a very New England-Victorian feel and are quite quaint. Vermont is where skiing actually began in the United States.

A very unique place to stay while at the Stowe ski resort is The Trapp Family Lodge of the infamous "Sound of Music" Trapp family. Take a look at the photo of the lodge below.

Vermont offers fantastic snow, enchanting resorts and a terrain that is hard to beat.

2. Chamonix-Mont-Blanc Ski Resort

France

Ski the top of Europe! Chamonix-Mont-Blanc is one of the world's finest Ski Resorts in France. Chamonix Mont-Blanc and the Compagnie du Mont-Blanc offer unrivaled thrills for skiers and snow-boarders of all levels. It is proud to have a lift-served vertical drop and the longest run, with sunny slopes, high altitude skiing in the major areas and accessible slopes on the valley floor for those beginning.

Even though Chamonix offers some of the world's finest skiing and luxury chalets, don't deplete all of your energy on the slopes as you'll need to reserve some for Chamonix nightlife in this magical mountain town. Chamonix's is one of the most happening après-ski resorts in the Alps. Party time is not for the light hearted as it doesn't end early. The party rages on as the bars, casinos and clubs don't close until 4:00 A.M.

3. Mount Norquay, Sunshine Village, and Lake Louise , Alberta B.C.

Banff National Park in Western Canada

Millions of skiers and snowboarders each year choose to Ski Banff, Canada to experience the amazing beauty of Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies and to enjoy superb skiing and snowboarding. With the incredible terrain diversity and the truly jaw-dropping scenery, one visit is usually all it takes for Lake Louise to make virtually everyone's top 7 list of ski resorts.

Lake Louise Mountain Ski Resort has been awarded Gold in the ski/snowboard resort category in the 2007 Calgary Herald Readers' Choice Awards. Lake Louise has 4,200 acres of terrain spread over four mountain faces, with 139 marked runs and three day lodges.

Sunshine Village is renowned for its lengthy season from mid-November until late May. Just minutes from the resort town of Banff, Alberta and Lake Louise, Sunshine Village offers over 3,300 acres of terrain on three mountains, with an average annual snowfall of over 30 feet!

Mt. Norquay may be the smallest of the three Banff ski hills, but it's worth a stop on the ski tour. It is the only hill where you can get a ski ticket by the hour

4. Vail, Colorado Ski Resort

Western Mountain Region of the United States

Be captivated with Vail Ski Resort, also called as the "America's Favorite Ski Resort". This truly unique ski resort in Colorado, in the Western United States not only holds skiing and snow boarding activities, but also gives it's guest the best art galleries, shopping, ski rentals and attire, European cuisine, ice skating, snowmobiling and they also hold night skiing sessions. If you are from out of town you might consider leaving your skis at home and renting the top of the line, cutting edge technology at one of the many ski shops that Vail has to offer.

The après-ski parties are fabulous and a great place to network and meet new clients for your business. There are a wonderful assortment of luxury lodgings to choose from that range from the luxury condos in town to the private lodges secluded in the woods.

5. Zermatt Ski Resort, Switzerland

Switzerland

Zermatt, Switzerland, home of the Alps and the Matterhorn, is not only Europe's cleanest ski resort area, it is also known as the cleanest in the world, and has more places to ski than could possibly be named here. Offering impressive and dramatic views, the village of Zermatt is nestled in a deep valley dominated by the majestic Matterhorn.

If I am forced to name just one ski resort in Switzerland it would have to be Zermatt. It is one of the largest and is also one of the most beautiful and picturesque with its land of majestic mountains and deep blue lakes that complements the gorgeous scenery of this wonderful warm and friendly country.

The lovely village of Zermatt evokes peace of mind in you while you are there. Gas fueled automobiles are not allowed in the village. The mode of transportation consist of electric-cars, horse-drawn sleighs and carriages. There are many that believe Zermatt to be the best and most beautiful ski resort in the entire world.

St. Moritz is another wonderful place in Switzerland to ski. St. Moritz is the famous winter playground of the very wealthy. It is a winter resort which offers skiing and a variety of summer and winter sports as well. For the health conscious, there are a multitude of mud bath and mineral baths available, along with mud therapy clinics. Spa treatments can be reserved at the Health Spa Centre.

The resort boast some of the finest of European restaurants where you may savor caviar and truffles. This town is well known for its active and expensive nightlife. Many of the people that frequent the clubs are not there to ski, but are there to be "seen".

If skiing in Europe is your dream, skiing Switzerland is a must. If you could take a skiing tour of the country, that is what I would rate as an ultimate ski vacation.

6. Kitzbühel, Austria

The "Peal of the Alps"

Go to Austria and visit Kitzbühel, or Kitz as it is often called, the "Peal of the Alps". This once quaint village has been growing by leaps and bounds over the past decade. Today, Kitzbühel is known as Austria's most well known, glamorous, plushest, and most expensive ski resort, however, there are a surprisingly large amount of cheap and cheerful accommodations. As in Aspen or Vail, you'll rub shoulders with the rich and famous and be treated like royalty but at about half the cost in US dollars.

It is situated between the Hahnenkamm and the Kitzbühler Horn and is the home of the The Hahnenkahm, the annual cup ski races, which is the most treacherous and famous of all of the downhill ski races. Kitzbühel, AustriaIt's slopes are vast with more than 50 lifts, however there are some tourist that complain that the "slopes are disjointed, with a lot of busing to get around them". As the former host of the Olympics, it has such beautiful, breath-taking scenery that it would steal any skiers heart away.

It is known as one of the most popular holiday ski resorts as people flock to the slopes during the holidays. It is considered to be one of the hottest spots for après-ski. They say that "the night life never ends and the casinos never close". You may think that you are worn out from skiing all day but the après-ski parties will bring you right back to life. With all of the modern and affluent entertainment going on the irony is that the streets of the village are still cobbled with very little traffic.

Additional activities in Kitzbuhel would include horse-drawn sleigh rides (with bells on the harnesses!), ice skating, curling, swimming in the indoor pools, ballooning, indoor tennis, bowling, and even theaters showing English-speaking films. The town is also well known as a spa center, full of health farms, and the public baths in town offer a multitude of amenities including saunas, steam baths, indoor swimming, and various types of massage therapy.

7. Whistler/Blackcomb, Alberta Canada

One of the most famous of the top 7 ski resorts in the world is the Whistler/Blackcomb ski resort which is in Alberta, British Columbia. Rising one vertical mile from a village of award-winning West Coast architecture, Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains offer the greatest vertical rise of any ski area in North America, and its massive high-alpine terrain, snow-blanketed and carpeted in swathes of dark green conifers, rivals other major ski resorts. It covers over 8,000 acres of skiing terrain between both mountains. Whistler is a very popular and very-developed area, and will soon be even more high-profiled as it is the site of the 2010 Olympics.

Whistler Village is adjacent to the gondolas that go to both mountains. Whistler VillageThere are many options for accommodations at one of the many sleek hotels; luxury condos and townhouses; or Alpine chalets and private luxury homes in and around Whistler Village. The lodges run the gamut from the traditional and cozy to opulent and grand. The car-free Village begins at the foot of the Whistler and Blackcomb gondolas, and has well over 300 shops and restaurants. There is lots going on that will appease the partier, gourmet aficionados, and families too.

Skiing enthusiast love the variety of fine dining restaurants, outdoor bistros and gorgeous lodges with gleaming highly polished wood, that serve gourmet cuisine from all over the world. There are also smaller, picturesque cabins with great specialties -- such as the famous Belgian Waffles at the Crystal Hut. The shopping there is internationally renowned, as is their après and nightlife action, making it one of the top "places to be seen" spots for both skiers and non-skiers.

I love the Whistler Catered Chalets the best. After a long exhilarating day on the ski slopes, you can return to your chalet and sit down to a epicurean delight that has been prepared for your group by the chalet host and chef. You can have cocktails as you relax in the hot tub or in front of the fireplace while your meal is prepared.

Great site! However, have you thought about adding Deer Valley to the list? It was voted #1 in North America this year by readers of SKI magazine. :)
