Top 10 Diets - What is the Best Diet Plan?

This list of top 10 diets has a little something for everyone and will have you shedding pounds in no time flat.

WARNING: you may experience extraordinary results with some of these diet plans.  In fact one of the top 10 diets claims you can lose 9 pounds in 11 days! Incredible? Impossible? Maybe, but thousands of people are rushing to join the program and there have been many reported successes (more a little later).

So with that, we set out to answer the question - what is the best diet plan going into 2008?

My Pick for the Best Diet Plan 2008

Fat Loss for Idiots - The Idiot Proof Diet

While it didn't "officially" make it into the list of top 10 diets (it came in at #11), my top pick for the best diet plan on the go is Fat Loss 4 Idiots because of it's unique approach, excellent tools and support, and most of all because it's based on healthy, sustainable principles.

This diet came from out of nowhere to become one of the most popular on the web today. Claiming you can lose 11 pounds in 9 days with their unique "calorie shifting" method, the fat loss 4 idiots diet (also known as the idiot proof diet) is made up of an online meal planner (great if you hate to plan meals) that tells you what foods to eat and when to eat them in order to trigger the release of fat burning hormones by your brain.

You can still eat 4 meals per day and get 3 cheat days after every 11 days. The foods seem to be mainly based on low glycemic index so it looks healthy to boot. This is definitely one diet to check out!

Top 10 Diets for Weight Loss

The most popular* weight loss diet plans today:

  1. 3 Day Diet -The Perricone Nutritional Facelift Diet

This diet claims you'll lose an incredible 10 pounds in just 3 days! So what's the catch? Well it really is intended to only be a 3 day diet, so while you may lose a lot of weight very quickly, it's not sustainable over the long run if you have more than a few pounds to lose. This is one of the most popular short-term diets on the go. The 3 day diet was made popular by Dr. Nicholas Perricone in The Perricone Nutritional Facelift Diet.

  2. Blood Type Diet

Made popular by Peter D'Adamo's (ND) bestselling book, Eat Right for Your Type, the Blood Type Diet advocates specific meal and menu plans based upon your blood type. While it's unclear whether blood type actually has any affect on weight loss, the healthy lifestyle and low calorie approach advocated in the blood type diet will surely have you losing weight.

  3. Slim Fast Optima Diet

Based on the steadfast "a shake for breakfast, one for lunch, and a sensible meal" mantra, Slim Fast with it's new low sugar version called Optima continues to be popular among dieters. The basic idea is that you replace two meals per day with a Slim Fast product such as a ready-to-drink shake, meal replacement bar, smoothie, or powdered mix.

  4. Body For Life -
Bill Phillips Eating for Life Plan

Bill Phillips' Body for Life program (which includes his Eating for Life nutritional program) is a comprehensive approach to weight-loss incorporating both exercise and healthy nutrition. The exercise program is short (each workout takes less than 45 minutes to complete) and the nutritional plan is both healthy and satisfying, allowing you 6 well-balanced meals per day (based on portion size - no calorie counting) as well as a cheat day every seventh day. I've personally read Bill's books and followed his program and I would highly recommend this as a safe, healthy, and effective approach.

  5. Mediterranean Diet

The people of the southern mediterranean (Spain, Greece, Italy) are known for their wonderful food and lower incidence of heart disease, which is why the mediterranean diet has become immensely popular. The diet advocates lots of fruits and vegetables, olive oil, some fish and poultry, breads and grains, and very rarely red meats.

  6. Zone Diet

The Zone diet is based on the recommended nutritional balance ratio of 40:30:30; that is each meal should contain 40% carbs, 30% protein, and 30% fat. This diet has remained popular for many years now and can be considered low carb (and low glycemic) due to the fact that the average person's diet contains upwards of 50-60% carb content and the Zone diet has a large list of restricted foods of which many are high glycemic index.

  7. Cabbage Soup Diet

The cabbage soup diet fits into the category of short-term weight loss diet fad. Requiring no long term committment, the basic idea is that by eating cabbage soup for 7 days you can lose 10 pounds. The claim is that cabbage soup is a fat burner, but you will lose weight due to the reduction in calories as well.

  8. Ornish Diet

Dr. Dean Ornish wrote a book called Eat More, Weigh Less, which essentially prescribes a very low fat diet based primarily on fruits, vegetables, and grains. The diet 'bans' a number of foods, but from what is left you are allowed to eat however much you want. This could be a good diet if you're an incurable snacker, but the lack of fat in the diet may increase your cravings and make it hard to stick with such a strict diet.

  9. South Beach Diet

The South Beach Diet emphasizes good carbs vs bad carbs, which means you don't have to completely give up breads and other foods rich in carbohydrates. The South Beach Diet is based on the popular and scientfically proven glycemic index rating of foods with low glycemic foods being "good carbs" and high glycemic foods being "bad carbs".

  10. Atkins Diet

Topping our list of top 10 diets is no stranger to the dieting world - the Dr. Atkins Diet has been enormously popular over the past several years and shows no sign of slowing.

Atkins is a low-carb, low-glycemic plan that works in four phases: Induction, Weight Loss, Pre-Maintenance, and Lifetime Maintenance. It has proven affective for thousands of people and could be your key to fast long-term weight loss.
