All Your Questions, Answered.

Wake up to the 21st Century. Your body isn't getting the proper nutrients from food anymore. Fast Food Dollar Menus don't count. You need to take supplements. But which ones?

We all know that supplements are healthy for you. That's an easy fact. You'd be pretty blind to believe not. So why aren't you taking any? Oh, you are? Great. You're one step ahead of the pack. If you're not, don't worry. That's why you're here, right? To look up the different kinds of supplements out there and find the best ones, right? You've gone through a dozen or so webpages already. You picked up a book or read a magazine article on your way to work or while waiting for a flight. Good for you.

That's not enough. You can't find a supplement or multivitamin that eases the question, "will it work?" Your dozen or so webpages or magazine articles just won't quench that intellectual thirst. "It's not worth the money yet. I'll wait 'till something better comes out," you say.

I'm here to end that. If you can't find what you're looking for here, you're hopeless. Sorry to say. I'm gonna point you in the right direction, tell you what you need to hear, show you what you need to take, and why, and you can take it from there. It's your body, after all. Take care of it a bit more.

Convinced that you don't need supplements? Take this online health assesssment to see where you stand, Hercules.

When you're done, read on.

The Food and Drug Administration

What is their guidance in all this?

Let's get some facts straight. One of the biggest questions you have about supplements is:

Are supplements regulated by the FDA?

Simple answer: NO.

Why not, you ask?

The FDA deals with only food and drugs. Supplements, sadly, aren't categorized as either.

Everywhere you go, whether it's to your local Walgreens or Longs Drugs, you'll find shelves full of supplements and multivitamins. In fact, you'll see entire stores, such as GNC and Vitamin Shoppe, that sell nothing but supplements, ALL of which are NOT regulated by the FDA. You heard right. NO supplement is regulated by the FDA. Sorry to say it.

So the FDA lets all the supplement companies put whatever they want inside your pill, put it in a nice shiny box, and slap a price tag on it. Let's hope you're not just eating rocks.

Then again, I'm not too big on how great the FDA is doing their job anyways.

Check out the recent FDA ruling on supplements.

The Physicians Desk Reference

The Holy Bible of Medicine might have your answers.

If you're looking for answers from the Food and Drug Administration, you might want to look elsewhere. Where do you find what the doctors and scientists are saying? Try the PDR, short for the Physicians Desk Reference. Heavier than a Civic, this book, dubbed the "bible of medicine" references every single prescription drug in the United States. It is carried and used by doctors and nurses to recommend and prescribe drugs to patients with every illness and ailment we have a drug for. The PDR adheres to super-strict guidelines, and in order to get your product in there, you have to pass those guidelines. It's not so easy.

However, if you want a supplement that is considered, tested, tried, and true to what they call "pharmaceudical grade," it would be in the PDR.

Okay, so I lied, you won't find your local store-bought supplement in this monster of a book. All except one.

One nutritional company was able to pass the PDR's strict guidelines: the potency of its raw materials, dissolve time of less than 30 minutes, and other benchmarks that would fail most supplements on the market.

By the way, the FDA regulates what is put in the PDR, so technically, the FDA does "approve" supplements... Technically.

The NutriSearch Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements

The Definitive Answers to your Definitive Questions.

Sorry, I don't have time to read the PDR. It's 5 times longer than the bible, and not as exciting. Pick up this book instead, available at Amazon.com, The NutriSearch Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements by Dr. Lyle Macwilliam. Yes, it's the know-all end-all book on every supplement out on the market worth taking.

If you have time to read it, the book is a non-biased comparison of over 1500 supplements out on the U.S. and Canadian markets. The smart folks responsible for this book put the supplements to the test, ranging from nutritional value to dissolve time. Anything you can possibly think of to test these supplements, they did. Great information. Great read.

But of course, no one wants to read cover to cover about supplements. Just get to the point, right? Which supplements rated one of the highest in the comparative guide? What company made the products listed in the PDR?

In the 3rd Edition of the book, one company blasted the competition, with its products rating a whopping 96.1% out of 100% score - the highest score in the publication. Fast forward to the new 4th Edition. Using a 5-star rating, the same company received a 5 out of 5 Stars, also earning the Nutrisearch Gold Medal of Achievement for product excellence. Only 5 other products, out of 1500, achieved the 5-star and gold medal rating.

Enter the World of USANA Health Sciences.

A Nutritional Company Started By A Scientist. Who can beat that?

Started in 1992 by Dr. Myron Wentz, USANA Health Sciences leads the way in developing and manufacturing high-end nutritional supplements for the public market. Hailed as one of the best companies to work for in the state of Utah, USANA broke records and received numerous accolades in its field of health and nutrition.

Aside from being the mystery company in the Physicians Desk Reference and The NutriSearch Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements, USANA was also featured in Forbes and BusinessWeek magazines as one of the top-growing companies, and one of the only in the health and wellness industry.

The company also offers a $1 million athlete guarantee. Athletes afraid of using supplements due to a chance they may test positive for drugs have USANA's guarantee that if they test positive using USANA products, the athlete will be rewarded $1 million. So far, no one has claimed this reward. We probably won't expect anyone to. But it's nice to have. Wanna know more about supplements and drug tests? Click here!

USANA's skin care line (yes, we have a skin care line), was also featured on the Oprah show, Shape Magazine, Self Magazine, and Travel and Leisure Magazine, to name a few more publications in case you're still not convinced yet.

Visit the USANA website for more info.
