Welcome!

My love for rats grew into a love for small rodents.  Though my biggest rat tops the scale at 2 pounds, he is still considered a "small animal."  I decided to open my heart, home, and bank account to help other rodents in need.  I give sanctuary to elder and troubled rodents and find wonderful, loving homes for others.  I take in unwanted, neglected, and abused rodents.  Everything from tiny dwarf hamsters to big ole' fat rats are welcome in my heart and home.  Being a privately funded, non-profit, one-person operation, I do have to turn down animals at times.  This breaks my heart, but I have to help only those that I can without bringing any damage into my own home.  The rodents of their own "Rat Room" with spacious cages, a bundle of toys and comfy hammocks, and tons of yummy foods.

This squidoo lens was made to help promoe my new website: http://topazsratrescue.angelfire.com  (still under construction.)  Available animals and more information will be on this website.

How My Rescue and Sanctuary Works

A Quick Overview

When a needy animal makes it's way to me, it spends a 2 week quarantine time in a seperate building from my home and other rodents to prevent the spread of diseases. During this time I am able to evaluate the animals' over all health and personalities. By the end of the 2 weeks, I know if the animals is considered "adoptable" or if s/he will have to spend the rest of their days with me and my crew. All my rodents are fed a premium rodent lab block diet from Harland Teklad supplimented with veggies, fruits, and occasional meats and other snacks. They are all handled and allowed out of cage playtime in their own area (i.e., mice have a play pen "bin" cage while the rats have a large exercise pen.) All rats are housed in spacious cages in same sex groups on fleece, towels, and flannel for bedding and litter boxes with litter (usually Yesterday's News or rabbit food pellets.) My mice are housed on Soft-Sorbent litter and lots of toys in glass tanks.

Adoption

When an animal is available for adoption, they are added to the "available" page on my website and advertised on a few different sites. An adoption process will take place for potential candidates including an adoption application and contract.

Adoption Fees

My adoption fees are incredibly small and sometimes even non-existent. It depends on the animal, how long I have had them, and the care (medical, special needs, etc.) required for them. All fees are put right back into caring for the animals. Almost all expenses used on the rodents come from my own pocket. After adding up vet costs, basic care, toys, and man hours into these animals, you can see why there can possibly be no money made in rescue (hence the non-profit status.)

About Topaz101

I am a seasoned rat owner, but still learning new things everyday.  I currently own 25 pet rats and 4 mice of my own, not including fosters that are waiting to find their new furever homes.  I am also a certified dog obedience trainer and have had nothing but happy canine and human customers.  Animals always seem to find their way to me.  I also have one dog, (Sara, a husky/border collie mix,) 3 leopard geckos, 1 crested gecko, 2 african clawed frogs, and 3 male betta fish.  I have only ever had pet rats for small animals, but looking to open that up to hamsters and maybe gerbils one day.  In the distant future I also want to adopt a few house rabbits.
