How to Select a Great Topic for Your Ebook

You can write an ebook on romantic travel destinations, starting your lawn-mowing business (for teenagers), how to increase self-confidence, how to grow tomatoes, crocheting tea cosies, how to use the tarot as a creativity prompt, how to plan a low cost wedding online, and so on.

The list of possible topics for your ebook is endless.  Your ebook can be about anything that interests you.

However, keep in mind that if you're planning to sell your ebook, you'll have to conduct market research to make sure that there's an audience out there for your ebook, and that the market is not overly saturated.

If you're not an expert on the topic, are you willing to do the necessary research to be able to write well about the subject and provide value?

Once you have a long list of ideas you've brainstormed, go through them one by one with a critical eye. Evaluate their merit as possible subjects for your ebook. Consider related ideas or concepts. Develop three or four ideas that hold potential as book topics.

Reality Checklist

This is a modified version of the list found in "Make Your Knowledge Sell".
  1. Is this a topic I'm really interested in?
  2. Are there at least 10 - 20 places to promote or market my ebook?
  3. Have I identified at least 3 to 5 pressing needs that my readers are currently facing?
  4. Can I find at least 10,000 prospects through online and offline opt-in email lists?
  5. Have I read 3 - 5 of my competitor's information products?
  6. Can I find at least 5 distinguising factors that my competitors have not focused on?
  7. Can I come up with at least 5 benefits why my product is better than my competitors' products?
  8. Are there are at least 5 people from whom I can obtain testimonials?
  9. Do I have a great domain that is memorable and applicable to my product?
