In India, technical education has become very expensive. Education in government institutions is affordable but seats are limited. Private institutions are mushrooming up in different fields of technical education and charging exorbitant fees for imparting education. In absence of proper guidance and knowledge, students find great difficulties in selecting approved and reputed institutions. Another disadvantage of geting admitted to an institution not having good reputation is difficulty in getting an education loan granted by the financial instituitions. Such students should verify whether a particular instituion is included or not in the approved list of institutions. Fortunately, Few leading publication houses like "India Today" and "Outllok" have taken up the responsibility on their shoulders and based on survey results, publishing the results and doing thankless job of ranking of institutes of different streams. However, their results help students in selecting institutes approved by competent authority and providing good education..
In India, annual surveys of academic excellence are made by two publication houses and these are 1. The India Today Group and 2. Outlook group
While rankings by these groups are largely a perception-based score but this perceptions is from within the the Indian academic community. Its not easy to make a quantitative survey as gaining access to such a large data (about 18,000 colleges) is not only difficult but next to impossible as it will require huge efforts, a large chunk of human resources and money. As per the Aroon Purie, Editor-in-chief of India Today, UGC backed National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) could get only 20% of the college under its ambit in 14 years of its existence as revealed in the editorial remarks.
