Ten ideas to help you select the perfect natural baby shower gift

Whether you've been invited to a "green" baby shower, or just prefer to shop eco-friendly, these ideas will help you choose a natural baby shower gift that any new mom will love!

1) Organic cotton Moby wrap

A wrap is an essential for a mom with a newborn

Although it may appear complicated at first, a wrap is very easy to use. Because the fabric goes over both shoulders and spreads out over the back, a new baby can be carried in the wrap safely and comfortably. Being held close to mom's (or dad's) chest is comforting for the baby and promotes bonding. Babies who are prone to reflux can often be calmed in a wrap without the need for medication. When my daughter was tiny, she would go from a crying distressed baby to a calm contented baby in seconds after being put in the Moby wrap. You can also find instructions online to make your own, if you are so inclined!

Cost: $40-$60 (or $10-$20 if you make one yourself)

2) Organic cotton infant gown

Perfect for middle of the night diaper changes

Infant gowns are the best for middle of the night diaper changes. They are long and cozy enough to keep baby warm, without the hassle of multiple snaps. New parents will thank you for thinking of their night time convenience! Organic cotton is soft and safe for baby.

Cost: $19.99-$25.00

3) Bamboo baby socks that don't fall off!

A rarity in the baby sock world, these socks actually stay on!

Ask any new mom, it is a struggle to keep socks on babies' feet. These socks are designed to have a snug fit, and really do stay on! Bamboo socks keep baby's feet warm in winter, and dry and cool in the summer. Made in the U.S.A. from organic bamboo without the use of bleach or formaldehyde. They come in size 0-6 months and 6-12 months. We think a few pairs of these socks makes a lovely gift!

Cost: $6.00 a pair, with discount for multiple pairs

4) Natural teething toys

Another alternative to plastic, for the teething baby!

When baby starts teething, it is nice to have safe and healthy teething toys. We like the fruit and vegetable cloth rattles. They are a fun rattle for baby's tiny hands, and can be dipped in water and put in the refrigerator to cool and soothe sore gums. They come in watermelon, banana, cauliflower, radish, corn and carrot.

Cost: $6.75 each

5) Bamboo beanie cap

A baby needs a good hat

Bamboo beanie caps are soft and breathable. They keep baby's head warm but not too warm! The ones featured here come in nice solid colors, to match any outfit. (Some moms, like me, end up with hats and clothes and socks and shoes in all different patterns, and nothing really matches. Solid colors are nice.) Snug, comfortable fit. Made in the U.S.A. from organic bamboo, without the use of bleach or formaldehyde.

Cost: $8.00

6) Vegan shoes and sandals

For little feet learning to walk

It is recommended that shoes for babies be "soft enough to crumple in one hand" as opposed to shoes with hard soles. These sandals shoes are handmade and are completely adorable! They are similar to the commonly found leather variety, but are made from suede-like fabric.

Cost: $19.50-$25.00

7) EcaPants

Their motto is "change how you change"

EcaPants are little training pants, and can be used like a diaper. They are wonderful for parents who decide to practice EC (elimination communication.) For parents who decide to conventionally diaper, these EcaPants are perfect for photographs, or when mom (or baby) wants to take a little break from diapers. They come in waterproof and non-waterproof versions, with velcro-like closure or snap closure. They are handmade by a work-at-home-mom.

Cost: $18.00

8) Amber teething necklace

Natural teething relief

Baltic amber, when worn as a teething necklace, releases a natural chemical that soothes the teething baby. (They work!) They are simply worn around the neck- they are not made for chewing. Beads are hand-knotted for safety, and feature a clasp that releases quickly with sufficient pressure (for additional safety.)

Cost: $18.00-22.00

9) Stainless steel water bottle

New mothers are always thirsty and it's nice to have a water bottle handy.

Kleen Kanteen and Sigg stainless steel water bottles (to name two popular brands) are a must-have for a new mom. Re-usable water bottles are an eco-friendly alternative to plastic water bottles. With stainless steel, the water tastes better and no one has to worry about plastic leaching into the water. While not as cute as clothes or shoes or socks, this makes a thoughtful baby shower gift, to be sure!

A stainless steel sippy cup makes a wonderful gift as well!

Cost: $15.00-$22.00

10) Shop consignment

A great way to reduce your carbon footprint

Many baby clothes, especially the ones in the smallest sizes, only get worn once or twice, or sometimes not at all. Consignment stores are the perfect place to find baby items that are in perfectly good condition. Look for your local consignment store, or find an online consignment store. (And mention to the new mom that she can consign her baby's clothes once they are outgrown!)

Some final words

One more suggestion!

We also recommend that you use eco-friendly options when wrapping your baby gift. Re-using gift bags and tissue paper is a commonly accepted practice these days, fortnately. You can also tap into your creative side and wrap your gift in a receiving blanket or flat diaper. Have fun!

    This is great!
I recently read about a "display" baby shower, where all guests bring the gifts unwrapped and set them up in a beautiful display on the table. Avoids wasteful packaging and gives the expectant mom more time to relax and visit with friends instead of unwrapping gifts.
