I came, I saw, I got my picture taken!
Ok, but although conquering is very outdated, I do LOVE to overcome, to fix things. No, that's not quite right (although I'm not bad with cars and DIY) : I LOVE to help people fix things for THEMSELVES.
'Oh, not another consultant who wants to come into my workplace and make everyone happy!' I hear you say.
In fact, this is roughly the first response we get when we approach organisations. Some CEOs and HR people may pay lipservice to staff care but are not really invested in human costs.
The wise ones know that human costs very rapidly translate into money costs.

Still, many organisations are in denial about just how much cash leakage is caused by - well, we are courageous people so let's call a spade a spade: treating people like dirt and pissing them off.

A psychotherapist talking of pissing people off?
What's your image of what a therapist should be? Some calm, blank faced matron in a twinset and pearls who is merely going to nod sagely while you go on and on about your pain?
Well, that is NOT us.
We believe we have been given incredibly valuable tools from our profession and we are on a mission to benefit EVERYONE with our knowledge and expertise because we don't think we should only spread our bread upon the waters of private clients!
That's why we've started our anti-bullying hotline: 0800 112 3468, by the way. It's free, and we, in person, are on the end of it! (Not all night, that would be silly, we need sleep!)

Because courageous, but never pushy, able to handle the truth, yet never shaming or blaming, tough yet caring, no nonsense yet gentle, is who we have become during our long journeys in becoming therapists.
Journeys many coaches don't make - and are certainly not obliged to make professionally.
At this point, you might be wondering where Julia is. You guessed it! She's the quiet one. I do the blogging and yelling, Julie makes the Internet stuff work.
But she's great in the group. We are a complementary team. And no one messes with her either by the way.
Ok, No. 1 and most important, we can spot when someone is seriously mentally damaged, or is undergoing a serious mental collapse.
Because what would be the point of standing in front of a flipchart talking a la Anthony Robbins to someone who is contemplating suicide because they can't handle the stress at work?
Or someone who has a huge mortgage and five kids but is being sabotaged out of a job by a co worker who frankly, is crazy?
Starting to 'get' who we are?
Still think none of this is going on in YOUR organisation? Think again. Be really honest. How many people are in your team? How many left recently? What's the office atmosphere like? Do you get a strange feeling that people are saying one thing and doing another? And so on. Come on. You're a human being. You have intuition!
We have stats too, but that's in another blog.
Best of all, we have the courage not only to identify all of the above but also the skills to deal with this issue without anyone feeling like they are 'trouble'.
In fact, all our interventions are characterised by two main philosophies:
1) TELL IT LIKE IT IS
2) NO ONE IS THE BAD GUY
How do we work?
Well, first off, we come into your organisation and do a 360 assessment. But our assessment does not focus on what is going wrong (yet, be patient!) but on WHO everyone is.
We don't bother with one-size-fits-all psychobabble quizzes, they are fine for recruiting but useless when things are just not right because individuals are messed up. The more messed up they are, incidentally, the more they are likely to lie to Mr Myers and Mr Briggs. Anyway.
As we were saying, people LIE.
But we don't care. Because we know when people are defending themselves (which is what lying is always about.) So we never call people liars. We just call them insecure people with low self worth who don't know any other way to survive.
We can help them get past their own defences because we know they are not the Bad Guy.
Once this is done, we get them all together in a room for a period of time. Usually more than once.
'Aaarrgghh', I hear you scream. That's hard. How will we ever schedule everyone? Isn't it scary being in a group, I can't do that, I might look bad/stupid/incompetent and I certainly don't want to tell awkward truths to other people. Most of all I don't want to hear any about myself!
Especially when people might Use It In Evidence Against Me.
Whoopee! is what WE then say......
Because, if you don't care enough to troubleshoot the stuff that is costing your organisation money, enough to schedule everyone to show up, then why have you hired us?
And yes, it is scary being in a group but there's no better place for everyone to learn what's going on.
WE are in control of this group. All you need do is show up! We won't allow any abuse, fighting, blaming, shaming, manipulation, power plays or secret sub groups.
Because all of the above have caused the trouble in the first place!
While your well-meaning Executive Coach is doing role play exercises, and giving motivational mantras etc, the power plays, the manipulation and the bullying still carry happily on RIGHT UNDERNEATH THE SURFACE!
Is your coach going to tackle these? Wait, isn't that him I see running as fast as he can towards the horizon?
Well. I think if we say any more we'll be Giving Away our Gold, as they say.
Julia and I have been our journeys. We've looked deeply into our own pardon-the-expression: carrr-ap.

Most psychotherapists aren't business people.
We are.
