Skin? Do you actually know what it is and made of?

To understand what causes wrinkles, let us first look at what exactly skin is. Well, let us have a good look on what your skin is actually made up off first. You see, your skin is composed of three primary layers: the epidermis, which provides waterproofing and serves as a barrier to infection; the dermis, which serves as a location for the appendages of skin; and the hypodermis (subcutaneous adipose layer). And, those three layers are called the epidermis, the dermis, and the last layer is the subcutaneous tissue.

And, since you would like to know what causes wrinkles, we need to understand a bit more of the structures of your skin, in order to further define what it is that causes wrinkles. And, how to cure them, right?

Let me tell you some facts about our skin plus some more details of what I found while doing a little research on our skin online from different sources. I have checked the facts among each other, and, well, this is what I can tell you here. First, I will be writing about each part of the three layers of our skin.

Layer one: Epidermis
Epidermis , "epi" coming from the Greek meaning "over" or "upon", is the outermost layer of the skin.

It forms the waterproof, protective wrap over the body's surface and is made up of stratified squamous epithelium with an underlying basal lamina.

The first and most common to the eye, (because in a normal life situation which I am assuming you are in, this is the layer you see most. The outside layer, which is the epidermis. So, this is the actual outer layer of your skin and it functions as a barrier to the outside environments. Rub over your skin, and this is what you feel.

The cells which are found in the epidermis layer are called keratinocytes and, they constantly are moving from the bottom layer of your epidermis towards the top layer of the epidermis. And, while moving upwards, they are building up a larger amount of something called keratin. By doing this task, they are developing a tough outer shell.

Then, as soon as these cells have reached the top layer of our skin, they normally just flake off. If it occurs for instance, that this process becomes faster than on average is the case, it can appear to make your skin look scaly.

Layer two: Epidermis
The second layer of your skin is called the dermis, which has the actual structural elements of your skin, or, also called the connective tissue. And, the connective tissue itself can be divided in various types of connective tissue with all having their own different functions.

When we look at for example, collagen, we see that it gives the skin its natural strength while proteins called glycosaminoglycans give your skin its turgor, and then, at as a last we mention the elastin fibers which on their part give the skin its elasticity or as some call it, its spring.

Dermal-Epidermal Junction

When you look at the junction between the dermis and the epidermis one could see that it is a very important structure of our skin.

I was most interested wen I read about the dermal-epidermal junction which connects forming something like fingerlike projections which are then called the rete ridges.

While reading I also found out that the cells of the epidermis receive their nutrients from the blood vessels which are inside the dermis.

Layer three: Subcutaneous Tissue

And, finally, something about the third layer. The bottom layer of skin is what they call the subcutaneous tissue and it is containing the fat cells.

Although some of us may not like those ´fat cells ´I can tell you they actually have a good function too. These fat cells will provide your body with and in built insulation to the body and make a person´s skin look plump or it makes it look full.

Some very interesting facts on our skin was found on wikipedia:
* The skin is often known as the largest organ of the human body. This applies to exterior surface, as it covers the body, appearing to have the largest surface area of all the organs.

* Skin applies to weight, as it weighs more than any single internal organ, accounting for about 15 percent of body weight on average, or roughly 6 pounds (2.7 kilograms).

* For the average adult human, the skin has a surface area of between 1.5-2.0 square meters (16.1-21.5 sq ft.), most of it is between 2-3 mm (0.10 inch) thick.

* The average square inch (6.5 cm²) of skin holds 650 sweat glands, 20 blood vessels, 60,000 melanocytes, and more than a thousand nerve endings.

Aging Effects of the Sun and Wrinkles
Do you like being in the sun? You know, those lovely hours lying on the beach, or, just walking in the free nature, with the summer sun shining on your skin?

I don´t know about you, but I tend to love it. And, I could do this all possible hours of the day! But, unfortunately, for your skin this can have another impact scheduled for you.

Sunlight actually damages the collagen fibers and causes the forming of abnormal elastin in our skin. When this sun-induced elastin forms, enzymes called metalloproteinases are produced in rather large amounts.

Normally, something that they call metalloproteinases will remodel our sun-injured skin by making and reforming the collagen. On the other hand, this process does not always work so good and some of the metalloproteinases in fact break down collagen as well. This normally results in the making of disorganized collagen fibers we got to know as solar scars. And, it is to be concluded that when the skin repeats this imperfect re growing process over and over, there is a fair chance that due to this wrinkles will develop in our skin.

And, when you look at it, the thinner cells make the skin look noticeably thinner.What happens is that the decreased stickiness of the cells decreases the effectiveness of the barrier function allowing moisture to be released instead of being kept in to the skin. I have found an interesting article on Argireline and how it works to reduce wrinkles.

First of all, what is Argireline?

Argireline is a hexapeptide which is six naturally occurring amino acids in combination.
