All About Torbay - Heart of the English Riviera

The aim of this lens is to provide an insight into what the area of Torbay in England has to offer for residents and visitors alike. As is suggested by the name Torbay is a bay facing eastward, located at the western-most end of Lyme Bay in the South-West of England. The towns of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham make up the area known as Torbay, which is located in the English county of Devon (full name Devonshire).

Torbay is primarily known as a popular tourist resort - past and present - however, this is only one part of picture. Torbay and the surrounding area has also played an important role at decisive moments in English and following the creation of the Union, British history. On some occasions Torbay has also played a key role in events that served to shape the course of world history. This side of Torbay's history tends to be lesser known and over time we hope to share some of this fascinating information with you here.

Torquay

Population: 65,000

Torquay developed from the Saxon hamlet of Torre, which was derived from the Saxon word 'tor' meaning a hill or craggy peak (the high points of nearby Dartmoor are still known as tors to this day). The community of monks at Torre Abbey are credited with building the first fishing quay in the area and the area's name began its progression through a number of spellings - Torrequay, Torkay and then to Tor Quay by 1765 - to its current incarnation of Torquay.

Paignton

Population: 45,000

Paignton is listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Peinton. The earliest settlement is understood to have taken place in approximately 700 AD and the name translates into modern English as 'the farm of Paega's people'. From the time of the Domesday Book until the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837, thirty different spelling variations appear in various records including: Paington, Paynton, Payington and Paington.

Brixham

Population: 20,000

Brixham was originally known as 'Brioc's Ham' which means the estate or home of Brioc in Saxon. By the time of the 1086 Domesday Book the name appeared as Briseham and by 1285 this had become Brikkesham. This original settlement became Higher Brixham, while in Lower Brixham a fishing industry developed. In 1850 the the town had the largest fishery in England, with a fleet of 270 vessels employing 1,600 seamen. Unfortunately the First World War (1914 - 1918) had such an impact on both vessels and men that by 1939 there were fewer than 6 vessels operating. Following the Second World War (1939 - 1945), the fishing industry recovered and commerical fishing still continues in Brixham to the present day.

About sconsult

SConsult!!!?
What kind of a name is that!!!?

Well, we are glad you asked.

We originally started out as a computer consultancy and programming company based in the South-West of England many years ago when MS-DOS was the primary operating system (OS) on PCs. MS-DOS limited file names to 8 characters long (plus 3 characters for the file type), so our full company name of Saunders Consultants Limited was regularly abbreviated to 'sconsult' and the name stuck even after modern OSes removed the file name limitations.
