Most Beautiful Place on Earth - Torres del Paine

Ranked #469 in Travel & Places, #23,304 overall

Is this the most beautiful place on earth?

Torres del Paine National Park in Patagonia Chile is fast becoming the leading contender for the title, Most Beautiful Place on Earth.

Like much of the competition it has mountains, lakes, rivers and big skies. Only here, the mountains are granite spikes and shards rising from shores of dazzling turquoise lakes; the rivers are gridlocked with luminous icebergs from splintering walls of ice; and the big skies are ripped to surreal shreds by high-altitude high-speed winds.

Trekking in Torres del Paine is about as good as it gets, with trails taking in tumbling glaciers, roaring rivers, endless wildflower meadows and the unbelievable Southern Patagonian Ice Field, an immense sea of ice.

Trekking in The Most Beautiful Place on Earth

Although Torres del Paine has some 250 km of trails, most trekkers do either the Paine Circuit or the Torres del Paine W. Of the two, the Circuit is the most spectacular and also the most demanding, as it includes the long hard trek over the John Gardner Pass. It can take up to ten days. Other lesser known treks include the PIngo-Zapata Trek, Laguna Verde Trek and the Valley of Silence (Valle del Silencio) Trek.

Torres del Paine Circuit

Distance: 150 km, 93 miles (including side treks ); 63 hours, 6 to 11 days

Highlights include views of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, numerous glaciers, roaring rivers and milky blue lakes.

The Patagonia W is shorter and easier.

Torres del Paine W Trek

Distance: 75 km, 46 miles; 30 hours, 3 to 6 days

Torres del Paine's most popular trek, the W has highlights, which include the French Valley and the Towers (Torres).

Shorter Treks

Other treks include the Pingo Zapata Circuit, which takes about four or five days and the day hike from the Towers to the Valley of Silence behind them.

It can be done, but you'll need to book refugios and campsites before you arrive.

Refugios and Camp Sites

Where to Stay

Torres del Paine National Park has about seven serviced refugios (with campsites) and at least four separate serviced camp grounds as well as plenty of hotels.

You can also trek sections of the Patagonia Circuit and the W as day hikes from a base, such as a traditional Patagonian Estancia or a Lodge.

Paine Massif

The Paine Massif was once an underground magma chamber beneath a layer of softer darker sedimentary rock. Solidified, up-thrusted, sliced up by glaciers and then shaped and sharpened by Patagonia's legendary wind, it is now an array of barbed peaks and granite spikes. The three spikes are The Towers of the Paine (Las Torres del Paine), after which the national park is named. They are Torre d'Agonsti (2850 metres), also called Torre Sur, Torre Central (2800m) and Torre Norte (2600m), also known as Torre Monzino.

To the south and east of them are The Horns (Los Cuernos), great ribs of pale granite tipped with "horns" of darker softer rock. They separate deep valleys through which pass some of Torres del Paine's famous trails.

Glaciers

One of Torres del Paine's chief attractions is its glaciers. The largest and most accessible is Grey Glacier. Its 270 square kilometers of ice fetches up right next to Grey Refugio, which is easily reached by foot from Paine Grande Mountain Lodge (3.5 hours, 11km) and by boat from Hosteria Lago Grey, which is on the other side of Grey Lake.

Other more remote glaciers include Tyndall Glacier, which is in the much less visited Southern side of Torres del Paine and Pingo Glacier, at the end of a long remote trail.

Other glaciers include Los Perros, Geikie, Puma, del Frances, Olguin and Olvidado.

Southern Patagonian Ice Field

View from the John Gardner Pass

The Patagonian Ice Field is the third largest ice cap on the planet. At nearly 17,000 square km, it's about the same size as Hawaii. All of the region's glaciers and quite a lot of the weather starts here.

Straddling the much debated Chile-Argentina border, it can be reached via three national parks, two in Chile - Torres del Paine and Bernardo o'Higgins - and one in Argentina - Los Glaciares. The best views are from The John Gardner Pass in Torres del Paine.

Torres del Paine Lakes (Lagos)

Torres del Paine's vivid turquoise lakes include Lakes Dickson, Nordenskjöld, Pehoe, Grey and Sarmiento. Of them, Lakes Nordenskjöld and Pehoe have probably the best views - The W Trek passes along their north shore. Pehoe can also be crossed by catamaran and the Grey II launch will take you across Grey Lake to the calving face of Grey Glacier.

Wind and Weird Skies

Strange clouds form when wind speeds reach 200mph or more, which is quite a lot of the time. Of course, wind speeds at ground level are much lower.
