Confronting Torture

There are some people who have a sexual fetish about torture, deriving some kind of thrill about being dominated and forced to obey through suffering. For the people who endure real torture, there is no such pleasure.

This Squidoo lens is about no fetish. Rather, it is dedicated to confronting torture wherever it exists, seeking to abolish the practice, especially when it is exercised by governments.

The confrontation of torture leads us to disturbing places... such as looking at ourselves in the mirror. Those of us who live in countries that we think of as free, such as the United States, are increasingly mired in new regimes of torture, executed, ironically, in the name of a war on terror.

Angry Banana Reveals Bush Torture Was Done For Politics, Not Security

Angry Banana on American Torture and the Iraq Connection

This banana is angry, and his species isn't even involved. Why? Because he just found out that the hundreds of instances of U.S. government water torture were used by the Bush administration to try to drag the claim out of detainees that somehow Saddam Hussein and Iraq were behind the attacks of September 11, 2001. Why? Because George W. Bush and Dick Cheney wanted to go to war. Hundreds of drownings to get false information in order to go off to a war that killed hundreds of thousands of people, killed thousands of Americans, blew a trillion dollar hole in the budget, and for what? For the pursuit of a lie, of weapons of mass destruction that did not exist. Arrr! The question is not why this banana is so angry. The question is, why aren't you? If this gets you angry, what are you going to do about it? Links: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/20/world/20detain.html and http://www.mcclatchydc.com/227/story/66622.html

Nancy Pelosi Lied About Torture

Nancy Pelosi knew what Bush was doing and chose not to resist

Nancy Pelosi Lied About Torture

As recently as just a week and a half ago, Nancy Pelosi said that she was never ever told by the Bush Administration about what specific torture techniques the American government was using. CIA reports now show that Nancy Pelosi was told about specific uses of specific techniques of torture as early as September 2002. Nancy Pelosi couldn't tell the truth about what she knew about torture, and she completely failed to act to stop George W. Bush from continuing his practice of widespread torture. Why then should we trust Nancy Pelosi with the office of Speaker of the House of Representatives?

Confronting the Military Commissions Act

Original articles about the Military Commissions Act, a pro-torture law from 2006

The Military Commissions Act ought to be infamous all across America, but it isn't. Many Americans have a vague knowledge that the right of habeas corpus was revoked in 2006, but few are aware that the same law that legalized arbitrary imprisonment, kangaroo courts, and legal amnesty for American war criminals also legalized the use of torture by agents of the American government. In order to effectively oppose torture, one must oppose the Military Commissions Act. The following articles from Irregular Times report on the effort to overturn the Military Commissions Act.

George W. Bush admits he approved torture

A special report from BNN

BNN: The Bush Torture Conspiracy Uncovered

When George W. Bush confessed "I Approved" to news of the meeting of top administration officials to approve U.S. government torture, CNN, NBC and CBS utterly failed to cover it -- even though Bush's act qualifies as a violation of federal conspiracy law, 18 USC 2340. So we have to cover it here, in our BNN: Bathroom News Network videocast.
