Toshiba Folio 100 tablet Vrs. the Apple iPod

The Toshiba Folio 100 tablet is Toshiba's answer to the Apple iPod. Costing less than half the price of the iPad you can guess that it's likely going to fall short in a few categories, but not all!

Personally I'm impressed with the large bright screen (my eyes are not all that good any more), the ease of use, Wi-Fi, Multimedia (except the sound volume, which I will get into later), and the other features. The 1000 MHz processor does a good job of clicking through programs and it's 16GB hard drive can be expanded using a 32GB SDHC card.

Personally I love the multi-finger touch screen making it easy to resize text, play games, and even surf the internet. Along with the touch screen the Toshiba Folio 100 has voice recognition software, so you can just state what you want and your tablet will enter your command into the Google search bar. But once again, I'll get into that in more detail lower in this lens!

32 GB SDHC Cards

While the 16GB onboard memory will get you a ways, if you plan on loading a lot of video, you're going to use that up pretty quickly.

What I like to do is buy a couple 32GB SDHC cards and load my videos on to that (OK, well more than a couple, I have a lot of movies). This allows me to keep all my videos organized by genre so I can put in the card that has the movie I want to watch and not use up all my Folio 100's storage space.

So you know, 32 GB is the largest you can go with the Toshiba Folio 100, I don't know what happens if you try to put a larger one in but Toshiba doesn't recommend it. Likely the tablet would only be able to read the first 32GB and would ignore the rest.

Amazon seems to have about the best price, I've personally used Kingston, PNY and Sandisk with no problems, but I would imagine any of them would work fine. You can also use the micro SDHC but you will also need to buy a converter. Many phones and MP3 players use the micro version so that is convenient if you want to switch between units.

Toshiba Folio 100 Accessories

One of the most important accessories you can get is protection for your Folio 100's screen. Make sure to buy a nice case. I chose a cloth case with a foam pad, I keep the pad in front of the tablets screen in case the case gets dropped. The shell of the Folio 100 is a pretty good hard plastic but one hit on the screen could end all the fun.

Another interesting accessory is the TV stand. I haven't bought that one but it looks pretty cool!

But the iPad, what more can you say? The Cadillac of the tablet computers!

Toshiba Folio 100 Sound Problems

Sad to say, Toshiba blew it when it comes to multimedia sound quality. Turned all the way up is just about right if it is completely quite. If you plan on using a splitter and sharing or you will be listening to music or watching a movie in a plane or other somewhat noisy environment, you are going to need some help.

Fortunately that is pretty easy to come by. What you need is a battery powered headphone amplifier, they're pretty cheap and work great at getting the volume up to a usable level. By the way, I'm not the type that wants the sound cranked all the way up, neither am I half deaf. This is a Toshiba bug that is going to affect almost everyone, try searching a couple forums and you will see all the complaints.

Toshiba Folio 100 locking up Problems

Folio 100 Locks up (hangs)

One of the more irritating problems of the Toshiba Folio 100 is that it locks up frequently on start-up. In my case this has happened since I first bought the tablet. I turn the unit on, everything seems alright but when I go to unlock the unit so I can use it in about 1 out of 3-5 tries hangs and I have to reset the tablet to get it to start up again.

To try to fix this I have downloaded the operating system upgrade and have also tried resetting the unit back to the factory settings. Neither have been helpful in keeping the unit from hanging occasionally on start-up.

This problem is pretty much just a minor irritation for me. I reset the tablet and it usually works the next time so it is only a delay of a minute or so. Still, the operating system upload should have included a fix for this problem.

Sci-Fi EBook Recomendation

Spinward Fringe by Randolph Lalonde

I started off by getting the Free eBook "Origins (Spinward Fringe)" to see if I liked the way Randolph Lalonde writes. That works out pretty well, I've picked up quite a few books for free on amazon. Usually you get the first book in a series for free and then you pay to read the others. Worked for me, I started with Origins and have read Spinward Fringe Broadcast 1 and 2: Resurrection and Awakening ($2.99), Spinward Fringe Broadcast 3: Triton ($2.99), Spinward Fringe Broadcast 5: Fracture ($2.99) and am just getting started on Spinward Fringe Broadcast 6: Fragments.

His style of writing is fast moving and rather unpredictable. No main character is immune to being killed off (or brought back to life for that matter). They have a good story-line and interesting characters.

Not quite as hard core are writers like Larry Niven but sufficiently technical to make you think.

These books are written in England- English not US English so much of the spelling seems off but in reality it's mostly just spelling variants.

Rooting the Toshiba Folio 100

Occasionally you will hear about "Rooting" or "Unlocking" your Folio 100 Tablet. While this is very popular to do with almost all of the Apple products, iPhones etc (also called jail breaking), I've yet to hear much good about trying this with a Folio 100.

The theory is that you will have greater control of the tablet, be able to add different operating systems and applications, in practice so far all I've heard about is the table locking up more frequently than it already does.

At this point I don't think I would recommend Rooting your Toshiba Folio 100 tablet PC.
