You Have to Know Why You Want to Quit Smoking.

Smoking prematurely kills many people every year. It is an agonizing, painful death. We are shown gross videos about what smoker's lungs look like. People smoking through pipes in their throats, etc. But is this really why people want to quit smoking? I don't think so. It is economics, pure and simple.

New York State has just administered a $1.50 tax increase to a package of cigarettes. This has sparked an increase in calls to the Smoker's Quitline which have jumped from 2,300 to over 10,000 a week! People want to quit smoking because they do not want to pay the tax increase, not because they saw an incredibly offensive black lung on television. Paying outlandish amounts of money for a package of cigarettes is why I quit smoking. My girlfriend is currently in her first month of quitting smoking, it is rough, but she is saving over $6.00 a pack a day. It was purely an economic decision.

Looking for the Motivation to Quit Smoking

Why do you want to Quit Smoking?

Many people have asked me how I quit smoking. Believe me, I was one of the greatest quitters in smoking history - I sometimes quit 3 times a day. It was a major problem. I tried every concievable method possible. Someone suggested that if I smoked the pipe or cigars that I would find these preferable to cigarettes and that I would quit smoking. What a pile of crap! Soon, I was smoking a pipe, cigar, and cigarettes. I was smoking something my whole waking life. People would turn the fire exhinguishers on me because I smelt like I was on fire. It was dreadful, I was smoking more than I was breathing.
One warm summer day I was sitting on my father's porch, talking to my dad, when I noticed that he had not smoked a cigarette during our conversation. This was a man who smoked one of the raunchiest non-filter cigarettes that the human race could dream up. I had borrowed one cigarette from him and that was the last time I had ever smoked one of his cigarettes. Anyways, he told me that his place of work had sponsored a quit smoking course and he had taken it. What he had done was that every time he had cigarette, he would read a book about what a dreadful habit it was. While he smoked he would look at how this horrible habit was controlling his life. After he had finished the course, he has not had a cigarette in almost twenty years.
So, he gave me the book, and I took it home and every time I had a cigarette, I would read this book. It gave me a new perspective on how cigarettes controlled my life. How, I was constantly planning my day around "having a cigarette". How I was making special trips to the store for cigarettes or lighters or even the lowly match. My work breaks, at the time, were a long tedious journey to the outdoors in sub-artic weather for a cigarette. I would plan my lunch around wolfing down my food, making the long tedious trek to the outdoors in weather that only a penguin could appreciate, for at least two cigarettes or for a cigarette and a cigar. I still think that making it illegal to smoke in a public places was one of the best laws in the land.
The list of what you would do for a cigarette goes on and on. It isn't even an enjoyable habit. It didn't satisfy any real need, it was just a habit you picked up to look cool, and you smelt like a chimney at the same time. I was beginning to really despise this disgusting habit. The real opportunity to quit came when cigarettes hit $2.00 a pack. I remember how mad I was that I was spending about $3.00 a day for cigarettes because I smoked a pack and a half a day. That was it. I picked a long weekend, where I wouldn't be tempted by my co-workers to go outdoors for a cigarette, and I quit. In almost twenty years, and I have not had a cigarette. Early in my existence as a non-smoker, when I had an urge for a cigarette I would inhale several times and the urge would go away. Now I don't even have an urge for a cigarette. I am one of those self-righteous non-smokers, the ones that smokers love to hate.
When I stopped smoking there wasn't all of these wonderful aids on the market. All that you could do, was just quit smoking. I believe that if you find a good non-smoking book , and one of the other stop smoking aids, that you will quit smoking. Visit my How to Stop Smoking Store and check out some of the products.

I didn't stop smoking because of the health risks. I stopped smoking because I didn't enjoy the habit, I didn't like the way it controlled my life. I also wanted to spend my money on other indulgences - mostly other hobbies that I had. I was costing me several thousand dollars a year to smoke (now a pack a day habit costs close to $2500 a year - a year's payment on a new car!). I wanted to spend my money on more enjoyable hobbies - like travelling, sports, radio controlled cars, real cars, etc. Cigarettes are a drain on your pocket book and on your quality time. There are Many Excellent Ways to Stop Smoking

This give you a more focused method to stop smoking

When I quit smoking, there was no patches or Hypnosis CD's to help you quit smoking. I would have used them, if there was. I have used hypnosis CD's for other habits that I wanted to stop, and they have worked. I have generally used them in conjunction with books, but the CD's were the main method of ending the habit or improving certain aspects of my personality. I have used them to build my self-esteem, improve my financial situation, improve personality skills, etc. I think that they work great, and I think that they will help you stop smoking. So, if you purchase a $15 dollar Hypnosis CD and a $10 book, and you stop smoking you will save thousands of dollars on your smoking habit. It is well worth it. I have saved over $25,000 by not smoking cigarettes and god only knows how much I have saved in health care costs. So, the energy it costs in a few hours of reading, or listening to CD's, or any form of quitting smoking is well worth the effort. Even if you have several false stops, it is well worth it, because one day you will actually quit. Visit my How to Quit Smoking Store and try some of my products

Did You start Smoking to Kill Yourself Slowly?

Health concerns were not even a consideration when I started and when I stopped.

I started to smoke to look cool - pure and simple. All the cool, hip kids smoked, so I started to smoke. It had to do with my self image, I wanted to be cool and hip so I started to smoke. When I quit 10 years later, it had nothing to do with health or my self image, it was economics and the urge to eliminate a habit that was adversely effecting my life. I was sick and tired of walking through a large supermarket to go outside in sub-artic weather, just to inhale some putrid smoke. And this habit was costing me several thousand dollars a year - for a habit, deep down, I did not enjoy. It had nothing to do with how ugly my lungs would look, or even those videos about people smoking through a hole in their throat. It had to do with basic economics and how a habit was controlling my life, it was that simple. If I was smoking a pack and a half a day, I calculated that it was costing me about $2,500 a year to smoke! When I think about it, I thank God I quit!

Good information. It's hard for those of us who don't smoke to understand why anyone would. It's good to hear from someone who had the habit.
