Paper or Plastic? 

The next time you're asked the age old question "paper or plastic?" at the supermarket, say "neither"!
The biggest problem with plastic bags is that they do not readily break down in the environment, with estimates for the time it takes them to decompose ranging from 20 to 1000 years.
Given the costs and inconvenience associated with recycling, and the fact that reuse only delays the plastic entering the environment, the most sensible option is to cut down on the number of plastic bags that you use, or stop using them altogether.

Plastic bags are so cheap to produce, sturdy, plentiful, easy to carry and store that they have captured at least 80 percent of the grocery and convenience store market since they were introduced a quarter century ago, according to the Arlington, Virginia-based American Plastics Council.
As a result, the totes are everywhere. They sit balled up and stuffed into the one that hangs from the pantry door. They line bathroom trash bins. They carry clothes to the gym. They clutter landfills. They flap from trees. They float in the breeze. They clog roadside drains. They drift on the high seas. They fill sea turtle bellies.
Millions of the plastic bags end up as litter. Once in the environment, it takes months to hundreds of years for plastic bags to break down. As they decompose, tiny toxic bits seep into soils, lakes, rivers, and the oceans.
So, paper bags are better right?
Wrong! Neither is good, both are a drain on our environment!
It takes more than four times as much energy to manufacture a paper bag as it does to manufacture a plastic bag.

In 1999, 14 million trees were cut to produce the 10 billion paper grocery bags used by Americans that year alone. Paper bag production delivers a global warming double-whammy forests (major absorbers of greenhouse gases) have to be cut down, and then the subsequent manufacturing of bags produces greenhouse gases."
Hopefully, people will begin to realize that paper and plastic bags both come at great cost to the environment and instead of stating which they prefer when asked, they'll proudly say "neither, I have my own!" and pull out their recyclable cloth tote bag.
So next time you go shopping, hold your head up proudly as you refuse a plastic or paper bag knowing you did something to help save the environment.
