Skin care products: May Contain Harmful Chemicals or Toxins
Ranked #6,723 in Healthy Living, #118,838 overall
Do you know what is in your skin care products?
Every day we use skin care products and cosmetics and many people give no thought as to harmful chemicals that may be in them. The skin care and cosmetic industry is unregulated, which means companies can use whatever ingredients they want to include. Testing is seldom done before products are sold to the public. This is quite shocking, and something many people aren't aware of.
The skin care or personal care products we use every day may contain chemicals linked to infertility, birth defects, cancer and other health problems. Since our skin readily absorbs the products we use, it's important to be aware of the possible dangers and use products from responsible companies that use ingredients that are safe. Thankfully there are more and more companies doing just this. You can find out who they are from The Campaign For Safe Cosmetics.

Where to find safe, chemical free skin care products
Cosmetics Data Base has a large list of safe products
Fortunately there are responsible companies that are committed to making skin care and cosmetics that are safe for you and your family to use. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics has many companies listed, they have pledged to do no harm and only make products that are completely chemical free. I have added the link here where you can see if your company is on the list. Also check out Cosmetics Data Base where they have thousands of products listed, and are rated 0 for completely safe up to 10 for most hazardous.
There is no reason to use toxic products when there are safe alternatives instead.

We need to make sure all natural products really are safe
Although a product may be labeled "pure, natural and organic" this can be misleading. At the present time no legal standards exist for organic or natural skin care products sold in the United States. Those labeled this way may still contain some harmful chemicals, so we need to be careful with what we buy.New industry standards may help people know the difference between the natural and not-so-natural products, but multiple standards with different meanings can be hard to understand. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics wants a standard that means ingredients really are as safe as they say they are.

Safe and healthy and economical too
The average woman uses about twelve personal care products every day. Many contain a dozen or more chemicals. Less than 20% of chemicals used in cosmetics have been assessed for safety by the industry safety panel. We don't know what harm they may do to us.
Lead is in some lipsticks
Yes, it's true..... lead has been found in lipstick. In 2007 The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics tested 33 popular lipstick brands at an independent lab for content. It showed that over half were positive for lead, including such well known brands as L'Oreal and Cover Girl.Even in very small amounts lead can be a health harard. It builds up in the body over time and applying lipstick with lead can add up. Companies are free to contain lead if they wish, despite the potential health problems, as there is nothing stopping them from doing so. It's up to the consumer to be educated about what is in their favorite products and to not buy from companies that are not showing concern for our health.
Why fragrances should be avoided
I used to like buying products with added fragrance, until I learned about the hidden harards.Fragrance can really mean almost anything apparently, and companies don't have to say what is in it. They often have many synthetic chemical compounds. Many products use the generic term "fragrance," in many personal care products such as deodorants, shampoos, creams and so on. Even "unscented" products can have masking fragrances, which are chemicals used to cover up the odor of other chemicals. Not very healthy is it?
Some hidden hazards that may be in products that contain synthetic fragrance include:
Phthalates: These are banned in Europe but are often found in North American products such as shampoos, deodorants and hair gels. Phthalates have been shown that they may be hazardous to our health.
Sensitizers: Some people may have immune system problems from fragrance and become sensitized to them.
Neurotoxins: Fragrance ingredients have been identified as one of six categories of chemicals that could be toxic to the brain and that should be thoroughly investigated for impact on our health.
Companies often use harmful chemicals in their products because they are cheap and give the impression of being effective. Because they are inexpensive it's a bigger profit margin for manufacturers. But it's not good for your health or for the health of your family.
Toxins in umbilical cord blood
The umbilical cord is the unborn baby's lifeline, giving the baby nourishment from the mother and removing waste. The amniotic fluid surrounds the unborn baby, and the cord brings vital oxygen and nutrition. However, it's shocking to hear that the cord also contains toxic chemicals according to a study entitled "Body burden: The pollution of newborns."Researchers from two major laboratories checked for the presence of toxic chemicals in umbilical cord blood of 10 newborn babies born in US hospitals in August and September of 2004. Of the more than 400 chemicals tested, 287 were found in umbilical cord blood. Of these, 180 can cause cancer, 217 are toxic to the brain and nervous system, and 208 can cause birth defects.
The full report is here: Body Burden Report
According to the studies authors, the amount of testing was limited because chemical companies do not have to reveal methods for detecting their chemicals in the body, If this had been the case, researchers believe they would have found much more than 287.
Can there be any doubt we need to do all we can to reduce this toxic overload? Especially for innocent newborn babies?
Shouldnt we be doing everything we can to protect ourselves, and especially for our children?

- Great job on raising awareness on the harmful chemicals lurking in some synthetic products. "Natural" on the label doesn't always guarantee a natural product either so it's good to educate ourselves.

- It's always great to find a person promoting natural cosmetics. In fact I would like to remind everyone that there are so many natural products out there available for cosmetic purposes so there is actually no reason for you to use those dangerous products.
I'm a beekeeper and I learned that bees natural products are also used in cometics, in fact, you can make many healthy cosmetic products out of beeswax, honey, pollen and even royal jelly...think natural and you wont need to worry about your health ;)
Great and informative lens, I like it! Keep up the good work ;)

- We are constantly bombarded with chemicals/poisons in our food and our personal care products so that manufacturers can maximize on their profits but it is detrimental to our families health. It makes me very angry that they are also trying to make it harder for us to have access to cleaner alternatives.

- Great lens! I used to make my own soap, but have not had the time to do it in quite a while. I'd like to get back into it. I also buy Thai sticks for deodorant. It took a couple of weeks for my body to adjust, but I'm very pleased with them. It's just salt. The ingredients in almost every single manufactured deodorant are known to be triggers for breast cancer. I hated thinking about that every time I applied them.

- And I was just thinking about where to look up these things. Combined with good food, lots of water and sleep, I've found a cleansing cream, the first that's ever worked good on me, and been thinking I better look up it's components. I had noticed that the government has some curious definitions for terms like fat free, and probably for natural if don't miss my guess. Thanks so much for this!

- Well, I am in shock that lead is allowed in lipsticks! I don't wear lipstick but that is jus not acceptable. My Mom and sister would agree whole heartedly about avoiding fragrance as the sensitizers can make them very miserable with terrible headaches, nausea and just plain misery. I just lensrolled and am about to feature on my Everyday Health Ledger lens.
