Affenpinscher

Your favorite dog breed is the Affenpinscher. The Affenpinscher is a balanced, wirey-haired terrier like toy dog whose intelligence and demeanor make it a good house pet. The Affenpinscher is a member of the Toy Group and was first registered by the AKC in 1936. This dog is sometimes called the monkey dog.

Brussels Griffon

The Brussels Griffon is known for the almost human expression on his face. He is highly intelligent and sensitive. Even though he requires the protections needed by any toy breed, he is a total companion, bright and alert. If he feels threatened, he makes a big fuss. This breed can also be known as Griffon, Griff, Belgium Griffon, Griffon Buxellois. In the 1997 film "As Good As It Gets" a Brussels was featured and it was played by 6 different Brussels. The Brussels Griffon is a member of the Toy Group and was first recognized by the AKC in 1910.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

The Cavalier would like to be constantly at the side of his owner. He plays gently and happily with children. He does need regular exercise for good health and happiness. This breed can also be known as CKCS, Cavalier and Cavie. Former President Roanld Regan had a Cavalier named "Rex" and Queen Victory owns a tricolog Cavalier named "Dash." The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a part of the Toy Group and was first recognized by the AKC in 1995.

Chihuahua

The Chihuahua is more than small; he's tiny. His adorable, apple-shaped head and big moist eyes make him nearly irresistible to kids. This sassy charmer is a healthy, but fragile, dog. He likes to bark and scamper around, but is mainly an indoor dog. He does not tolerate cold weather. The Chihuahua is part of the AKC Toy group and was first recognized by the AKC in 1904.

Chinese Crested

The Chinese Crested comes in two varieties: Hairless and Powderpuff. The Hairless is the most unusual looking of the two having a tuft on his head called his "crest", a "plume" on his tail and his feet are covered in hair called "socks". Outside he needs lotion to keep him from getting sunburned. Common nicknames for this breed include Crested and Puff. Fluffy is a famous crested from the 2000 film 102 Dalmatians starring as Cruella DeVil's dog. The Chinese Crested is part of the AKC Toy Group and was first recognized by the AKC in 1991.

English Toy Spaniel

The English Toy Spaniel's coat flows like a royal cloak. It is long and silky, with extra fringe on the ears. The breed is divided into four varieties based on color: Blenheim (rich mahogany red and white); ruby (rich mahogany red); Prince Charles (white with black & tan markings); and King Charles (black and tan). All need frequent combing and brushing. The English Toy Spaniel is a part of the AKC Toy Group and was first recognized by the AKC in 1886

Havanese

The Havanese is a small, sturdy dog with a profuse, untrimmed coat. His plumed tail is carried curled over his back. He is an affectionate, happy dog with a lively springy gait. The Havanese is a member of the AKC Toy Group. Other names for this dog breed include Havanese Cuban Bichon, Havanezer, Bichon Havanais, Havana Silk Dog, Bichon Havanes and Havaneser.

Italian Greyhound

The Italian Greyhound or "Iggy" is a sporty little dog. He prances lightly in play and keeps his sense of fun throughout his life, prefering to spend most of his time with his owner. He likes attention and affection; is a peaceful and gentle friend. This breed can also be known as Piccolo Levriero Italiano or Iggy. The Italian Greyhound is a member of the AKC Toy Group and was first recognized by the AKC in 1886.

Japanese Chin

The Japanese Chin is bright and alert and likes being clean and tidy. He is playful; sometimes making up his own tricks to show off to his audience of friends. Maltese

The Maltese originated in Malta and is part of the AKC Toy Group. They are lively, playful and vigorous, yet fearless, responsive and gentle in nature. For more than 28 years he has been the aristocrat of the canine world. This breed can also be known as Bichon Maltaise.

Manchester Terrier

The Manchester Terrier originated in England and is part of the AKC Terrier/Toy Group. They are known for having a quick and protective nature and usually gets along with other dogs. They are deeply attached to their family. This breed was once known as the gentleman's terrier - it was adept at rat killing and rabbit coursing.

Miniature Pinscher

The Miniature Pinscher originated in Germany and is part of the AKC Toy Group. They are fearless and self possessed - with a spirited presence who is quick, brave and active. Despite their small size, they are a valuable watchdog who thinks he is a big dog. They come in a red and a black/rust variety. This breed can also be known as Zwergpinscher and Min Pin.

Papillon

The Papillon originated in Europe and is part of the AKC Toy Group. They are happy, alert and friendly; enjoys cuddling with his family but also likes to play. The name papillon means butterfly in French.Other names for this breed include Continental Toy Spaniel, Epagneul Nain Continental, Butterfly Dog and Squirrel Dog. Christina Aguilera owns two Papillon named Chewy and Stinky. The Phalene is the drop ear variety.

Pekingese

The Pekingese originated in China and is part of the AKC Toy Group. Though good natured and affectionate, this breed is opinionated and you need to earn his respect. This breed has also been known as: Lion Dogs, Sun Dogs and Sleeve Dogs. Other names for this breed may include Peke, Foo Dog, Fu Dog, Peking, and Palasthund.

Pomeranian

The Pomeranian is a member of the family of dogs known unofficially as the "Spitz Group." The Pomeranian is a descendent of sled dogs of Iceland and Lapland. In 1888, Queen Victoria fell in love with a Pomeranian in Florence, Italy, and brought the specimen back to England, influencing its popularity dramatically. In fact, a Pomeranian lay beside the Queen at her death. The Pomeranian is part of the AKC Toy Group. Other names for this dog breed include Deutscher Zwergspitz, Toy German Spitz and Zwers.

Poodle

The Poodle originated in Germany and is part of the AKC Non-Sporting Group. Known for theyr high intelligence and quick wit. They can be a clown when the occasion calls for it. They come in 3 sizes: toy, miniature and standard (small, medium and large).

Pug

The Pug is of Oriental descent and part of the AKC Toy Group. This is an adaptable breed, full of confidence. Is described as friendly and sensitive. Warms the hearts of old and young. "a lot of dog in a small space." Other names for this dog breed can include Carlin, Chinese Pug, Mops and Puggu.

Shih Tzu

The Shih Tzu is part of the AKC Toy Group. Described as sturdy, lively, alert, affetionate and friendly to all. Shih Tzu actually means "lion." Other names for this breed can include Chinese Lion Dog and Chrysanthemum Dog.

Silky Terrier

The Silky Terrier originiated in Australia and is part of the AKC Toy Group. They are spunky in spirit and have a zest for life. This breed is smart, quick moving and has an inquisitive nature. They were originally known as the Sydney Silky Terrier, but changed their name in 1955. This breed can sometimes be known as the Australian Silky Terrier.

Toy Fox Terrier

The Toy Fox Terrier originated in America and is part of the AKC Toy Group. They are comical, playful and energetic. Known to adapt easily to any situation. They are actually the outcome of blending: smooth fox terrier, min pin, italian greyhound, chihuahua and the manchester terrier. This dog breed can sometimes be called American Toy Terrier or Amertoy.

Yorkshire Terrier
