Toyota Engine Families

Understanding the naming conventions Toyota used for their engines.

Toyota engines evolved over the years, and as newer technologies became available or a new Toyota model was released, then it's possible that a new engine or a new generation of an existing engine were used with it.

The Toyota Hilux has been factory outfitted with the R, RZ, VZ, L, GR, KD, and KZ family of engines. This may sound confusing because those letters don't abbreviate anything specific. They were the designated letter codes that Toyota engineers came up with. This article will explain what those letter codes means and the Hilux (or Pickup or Tacoma) that the engine is found in.
