Preston and James

I have two small boys -- Preston, age 4 and James, age 2. It can be difficult to decide what to tell the grandparents, etc to get them for presents at all the appointed times of the year. And with children at these ages, it can sometimes be hit or miss. Something you think they are going to love is a complete dud. This site is just a sample of some of the "hits" we have had over the last couple of years.

So Christmas and Birthday are coming

Here are a few things that we are looking at for the boys.

Of course, Legos. We are trying to decide what to do for the big Christmas morning present. We have tossed around the idea of some kind of big Lego Star Wars ship, maybe a castle or a pirate ship; or maybe a Hot Wheels race track. Then for Preston's fifth birthday, definitely Star Wars Legos, probably some smaller starfighters or something like that. We recently gave as a gift to another five year old a Star Wars Transformer Crossover which was also very popular at our house. My mom got Preston the Nitro Notebook for his birthday. I think he will love it.

LEGO Star Wars Anakin's Fighter

LEGO® Castle King's Castle Siege

Legos

Legos have quickly become very popular at our house in the last year. Preston received his first box of Duplo Legos at age 2. Now at age 4, he is a huge fan of the regular Legos, "Star Wars" in particular. He, of course, has all of daddy's thousands of Legos from when he was kid, but he has still decided that for Christmas, he must have some Star Wars Legos. We have to watch James closely with the regular Legos -- they do end up in his mouth. I don't think he has swallowed any yet. James is quite happy with the Duplo set when the others are put away.

Trains

My boys love trains

It all started with Thomas the tank engine when Preston was two. "Tahna, Tahna" he would say. Now, we couldn't get him to sit down and watch the show but he loved to play with the wooden train sets and the Thomas character trains. He has acquired quite a collection over the last couple of years but we didn't necessarily spend hundreds of dollars. I think the first wooden train set we bought him was $12 at Wal-Mart. He did get some of the pricier Thomas engines but they fit on that inexpensive track just fine. We have since added to it with a 70 piece track from Target as well as a complete train set with table we bought out of the JC Penney's holiday catalogue for $75. We have had hours and hours of fun play with this stuff and we can keep adding on to it as much as we like.

We also recently received a Geo-Trax set for James's second birthday. It is an all-in-one set that can be added onto as well. If we had known when we started out, how much more expensive the Thomas wooden train sets, etc were, we probably would have started out with this in the first place.

Trucks

of course

There really is something embedded in the genes of boys that says "I love trucks". This actually encompasses anything with wheels. I think one of their first sounds was that of some sort of vehicle. Our favorites are the Little People vehicles. We have an airplane and a dump truck, both given to James this last year. Both boys love them. They come with the people and they make cool sounds. We must have a hundred hot wheels cars, trucks and various other vehicles as well as vehicles from other makers. And, of course, the trains mentioned above. They never tire of pushing those vehicles around and making noises. And when they see them for real, look out -- that is way exciting!
