Model railroads - my track plans

I like model railroads, and I have built several model railroad layouts so far. Here is my little trackplan collection. Themes and ideas, for inspiration, or just for fun!
The track plans are for small or medium layouts, as I prefer "compact sized" model railroading.....

Trackplans for N-scale model railroad layouts

Please note: The following trackplans are made for N scale (I use Fleischmann rails) - but feel free to get inspired for another gauge like H0 or whatever! The measurements are in the "metric system" (as a German, I am not very familiar with "feet" and "inches"....).
Some of the following model railroad track plans I have realized actually; other, however, are my next projects for the future....

Software for track planning?

Model railroadAn idea comes up first without any track planning software. It is in my head; a simple pencil and a sketch is all I need. I use digital track planners only afterwards for illustration on a website like this.
However, let me begin with a model railroad track plan on 200 cm x 100 cm (= the size of a bed mattress!) with a big "dead end" terminus station. See the photos, they are taken from this existing model railroad layout! Here we go:

Trackplan 1: BIG terminus station on small 2 x 1 m

Track plan
Track plan model railroad layoutOpened up: Seems to be more a "trainspotting layout" than a real "dead end" station, hm? One track even makes an 180° turn within (= underneath) the station..... But model railroading is fun and fantasy too, isn´t it? Freight trains use the "grey line", there is one track (on the upper left), which runs aside of the passenger terminal. Electrifying the tracks with overhead wiring catenary may be appropriate.

Track plan 2: industry area

Iron and steel works

No passenger trains, please: a huge industry area on little120 cm x 60 cm. Could be a blast furnace scenery with iron and steel works, or any other industry, like a refinery.

Track plan blast furnaceA closer look at this plan reveals one track going through a building on the right side - a good trick for kitbashing fans to keep the size of a model railway layout compact! Furthermore, this track generates a reversing loop, when coming back to a switch. But it is not necessary to wire this as a reversing section! Simply put in between a plastic as a circuit breaker - this allows "point-to-point" shunting with your locomotives, too!

About: making a track plan for model railways

Model railways

A picture from a industry diorama, which I created during winter 2008/09. Generally, when designing track plans for model railways, it is a good idea to keep an eye more on specific themes than to go for "all inclusive" - concepts. Just creating simple ovals for the model trains will not ensure much fun in the long run.

Track plan 3: Nice landscape for the desktop

Model Railroad Layout
Track plan N scaleA small model railroad layout featuring a lovely and mellow landscape in a hilly scenery on a compact desktop size (90 x 70 cm). A dead end terminus station, some storage siding tracks, a stone quarry or a timbermill may complete the rural atmosphere and give "reasons" enough for "traffic" with a little loco and some wagons, freight trains as well as passenger trains. On the upper level there is a reversing loop, and the building in the center of this layout apparently is more a tunnel than a house!

Model ships or model trains?

Harbour
N scale2 harbour track plans: The big one above (120 x 80 cm) offers a lot of possibilities for "playing".
The small trackplan on the right is a petty micro layout - a diorama on 80 x 40 cm, which I created in 2009 to be placed in a bookshelf.
HarborA picture from this "bookshelf" harbour scenery! The harbor quay allows some shunting and switching with 1 locomotive and 2 or 3 wagons. The rails on the upper left of this track plan (=behind the bridge) are a kind of fiddleyard. The pier is at an angle of 135 degrees. The ships are all self-made. See also my website:

Track plan 6: depot for steam locomotives

Locomotives N scale
What about a nice presentation for your locomotive collection? Idea on 120 x 80 cm with a large locomotive shed and extensive engine facilities for coaling, water, diesel or repair. Could create a very scenic ambience! Furthermore, the "looped trackplan" (= the tunnel) in combination with the turntable allows steam locos to go (or to come?) always "funnel ahead". A kind of roundabout traffic circle......

Free track plans for download?

Of course - my track plans are free! You scan store them up on your private PC, or use them as a template for your model railroad layout. But some guys still think, that they can show my graphics on other websites or forums without giving me any credits. That is the reason, why I have put now a "©" symbol on my graphics. So whenever you show my ideas in a public way, please ask me, or give me a link at least! Thank you.

However, this page here is just an introduction; if you are more interested, you are welcome to visit my website with pictures of my existing layouts, more informations, PDF trackplan downloads - or just to see, how the ideas "work". Here you go: Track plans
