Understanding your choices for neck traction units- Getting the Right Traction for Neck Pain Relief

If you have ever suffered from a pinched nerve in the neck, your Doctor may have suggested neck traction as a form of treatment. The traction unit itself can look scary and daunting, but the pain relief that it provides can be very effective and long lasting.

This Squidoo Lens is by Arc4life and discusses the various forms of neck traction. This lens will discuss what neck traction is, what it is used for, and how other treatments are used in conjunction with it. There are many units out there for stretching your neck, and Arc4life examines a few of the neck traction models out on the market today.

What is Cervical or Neck Traction?

Why use a neck stretcher?

Cervical traction has been applied widely for pain relief of neck muscle spasm or nerve root compression. Traction occurs when a force is applied to a part of the body to decrease paraspinal muscle spasms by stretching soft tissues. Traction is also used to separate facet joint surfaces or bony structures. Studies have shown that traction must be constant so that the muscles may fatigue and the strain falls on the joints. It generally takes 2 minutes of sustained traction before the intervertebral spaces begin to widen. Forces between 20 and 50 pounds are commonly used to achieve intervertebral separation.

For What Can I Use Neck Traction For?

What the Indications for Cervical Neck Traction?

  • chronic neck pain
  • disc herniation
  • disc bulge
  • Muscle Spasm in the Neck
  • Tightness in the Neck
  • Arthritis in the Neck
  • neck Stiffness
  • numbness and tingling in the arms and hands
  • shooting pains into the upper extremity

What Other Treatments Are Done with Neck Traction?

Hot Cold Therapy, Medications, Tens, Muscle Therapy Can be done in Conjunction with neck traction

Usually, patients have tried all other types of treatment such as moist heat or ice therapy, medications, exercises, and finally they try neck traction. It can be part of a physical therapy or chiropractic session along with other things such as modalities of heat/ice and exercises. For many patients this gentle stretch in the neck for 10-15 minutes feels good and is very therapeutic. Traction of the neck has been around for a long time and these days. 4 out of 5 gold stars for the posture pump 1000. It accomplished neck traction comfortably at home and it is priced right on amazon.

Amazon customer Naomi Greenfield says, "From the first time I used this, as my chiropractor's office, my neck has felt better than ever. I've had chronic neck problems for more than 30 years, and this is the first thing that has made a lasting and significant difference. I notice more blood flow to my head, and I feel clearer the whole day through. I sit, stand and walk more comfortably. I feel taller. My neck is improving noticably day by day. "

Amazon customer C.Davis says, "I've had chronic neck pain for over 4 years and I'm only 23 years old. I got massages and it never helped for very long, and I started seeing a chiropractor (adjustments also did not help). My X-rays showed my neck curve to be a straight line rather than a curve.

Finally my chiropractor showed me the Posture Pump and I bought it on a whim. When I got it home, I thought, "What in the world did I buy?!" but I decided to try it anyway. WOW. It essentially cured my neck pain after a few weeks of use. I no longer get adjustments and only get a massage every month or so to stay loose.

If you have the problem I had (a straightened neck curve), you need to at least try it. It could be the cure you've been waiting for.

It is expensive but it pays for itself quickly, and being pain-free after years of agony is priceless.

A Neck Pillow Designed with Cervical Traction in Mind

Arc4life's Cervical Linear Traction Neck Pillow Delivers a Great Stretch at Night

How does Arc4life's Cervical Linear Traction Neck Pillow Work?

Pretend that the ball (below) is your head and the rods are the soft wedges of the neck pillow. Because of the simple laws of physics, the two soft wedges create a very gentle pull by diverting the downward force of gravity to a horizontal plane (away from your shoulders, thereby relieving the pressure between the bones of your neck).

With this special neck pillow, one can sleep on their back or on their side. Off course, maximum traction is going to be acheived by sleeping on ones back. There are are two sides to this special pillow. The special "V" gives your c spine a gentle neck stretch while sleeping, and allows you to be in an ergonomic position for sleeping. The opposite side of the "V" Is called the support side of the pillow. This side is gentler, and if you have neck pain/ neck stiffness/ sensitivity- use this side first before using the traction side.

With this type of neck pillow, some people can have soreness. This is normal. Similar to when you go to the gym and use muscles that you have not used before. Start by using the pillow for just a few hours in the beginning and slowly increase the time you sleep with the pillow.
