Introduction to Getting Traffic From Image Searches

An intro, and a disclaimer!

I confess, I've been holding out on one of our best traffic secrets,- image searches! What I want to do with this lens is share with everyone the power of image searches, and the traffic ranking images will bring to your lens and/or web page.

Let's start with some screen shots of image searches and how some of my lenses have ranking images in the search queries. I will also share a few lensmaster dashboard traffic stats to reinforce the concept of image searches.

First, a disclaimer. I've found ranking images to be a fickle kind of thing. I'm providing screen shots of images I have ranking today, however, the same images may not be ranking tomorrow. And of course, other images not ranking today might be ranking tomorrow! In fact, our Polly Klaas® Shelby Mustang lens was #1 in Cars & Trucks, and #27 overall. 65 days on the top 100 lensrank list for searches for Ford Mustangs:

1965 Shelby Mustang Traffic Stats

For the most part, we are no longer getting traffic from image searches for our Mustang lens (sad face here!), however, we have several other lenses now doing well as a result of image searches.

Without further ado, let's start with some examples!

It All Started With Our Real Estate Websites!

We first realized we can get bonafied leads by the sources of incoming traffic to our real estate site (www.joelane.com). Image searches for a few cities in our area:

Benton City Washington Image Search

An "Angel" Search Brings Heavenly Traffic

This image search return is perhaps the best image ranking of our lenses. You'll notice two (2) images on page 1 for the search of 'angel.' Also note this is out of 134,000,000 results! Yes, you heard it right, 134 million!

How About An Angel Poster

I modified the code to add an alt tag of "Angel" and the poster found on our Squid Angel lens is on page 2 in the same 'angel' search as above. Hmm, sounds like a great way to sell posters, eh?

Taking A Peek At Mike Huckabee's Family

When Mike Huckabee was running for the GOP nomination, this lens was #1 in News & Politics, and made it to #9 overall, mainly due to image searches for 'mike huckabee family.'

Let's Go To Calcutta India

The search for 'calcutta india' brings traffic to our Mother Teresa lens. Check it out,- page 1 out of 392,000!

How About Save The Children?

Here ya go, #1 for 'save the children,' (out of 25,3000,000) and #8 for 'save the children logo.' The Squidoo image even beat out Save The Children's website!

Further Proof Image Searches Bring Traffic

Here's a screenshot of image searches from the dashboard... and, I'm not gonna tell ya which lens! :o)

Dashboard Image Referrers

Ok, Enough Is Enough, - I Think The Point Has Been Made!

Now, how the heck do we get an image to rank? It's all about the alt tag (for the most part)!

SemperFidelis Smiley FaceOk, ok, ok, already! Point's been made, now for the technical stuff. Ranking images is simple, actually. Just consider these points:

  • You need to add an alt tag to you image. The alt tag was intended for folks with disabilities, or low bandwidth, however, most use the alt tag to render an image's title. The alt tag helps a search engine index the image. I've provided an example of the coding in my cool smiley face pic at the end of this module. Hmm, maybe one day it will rank for 'semperfidelis smiley face!' Go ahead, hover over the image!
  • It helps for the image to be surrounded by content relevant to the image. Not always the case, as the Save The Children examples above are examples to the contrary.
  • When using Wikipedia content, including the images, avoid using Squidoo's Wiki module. If using the Wiki module, you will be unable to add the alt tag and/or title tag to your images. Instead, copy the material and rewrite the code to include the alt tag. Unsure of how to do write the html code, try Glen's (N376) Basic HTML and Advanced HTML lenses. If you are going to be lensmaster savvy, a basic knowledge of html is a must!
  • Oh, one last thing. When using a text module, never use the "Upload an optional image to accompany your text" feature. Instead, use html and include the image in your text so that the image is properly attributed (the alt tag).

Alt Text Code Example

Take note of the alt attribute info in the above code for our SemperFidelis Smiley Face image. Again, key to ranking an image. Unsure of what all the image coding is about, consider visiting this Images How-To lens.

Let's Discuss The Polaroid Module, A Look At Cassie and Carly, Our Oldest & Our Youngest!

Cassie and Carly, However, In A Text Module!

Try a Poloaroid pic in a text module!

The above image is an image in the Polaroid module. The image below is a screenshot of the image in a Polaroid module, coded, and pasted in a text module. My recommendation for the Polaroid module is to not use it as is! Create your Polaroid pic, then take a screen shot of it using your prt scr key on your keyboard, paste in an image editor and save. Post the hosted image in some text and you are good to go. I've provided and example of my Cassie and Carly pic coding below.

Conclusion - Optimize Your Images

Yup, another thing on your 'list of things to do!'

If you haven't been optimizing your images, looks like you have work to do. I'll bet you'll increase your traffic by as much as 25%. Get busy, will ya!

P.S. If you buy something from this page...

Acumen FundSave The Children... you'll automatically be making a donation to Save The Children, working to solve global poverty. As a matter of fact, all of our lenses donate to Save The Children or The Acumen Fund.

Doesn't that feel good?

I have been noticing that I have been getting some traffic from Google through images and I realised that must be because of the captions or alt tags I have been using, but I also heard that the actual file name can be picked up as well. So it is worth using a proper naming convention for your images that is descriptive rather than the numeric sequence your camera assigns, all it takes is a little renaming and you could get your self noticed.

Question about the alt tags- can more than one of them be used in the code for one image?
