Trail cameras(scouting cameras) were developed by hacking a standard point and click camera so that it could be operated by a PIR on a control board. This allowed hunters to place the camera in the wild and monitor the animals on the land and their habits. The cameras have developed thanks to some major engineering leaps and the hunting community has accepted them with open arms. It has almost gotten to the point that people look more forward to checking their trail camera than actually hunting. I know I may have exaggerated but they really have changed the way people deer hunt.

Many times we just box up the trail cameras for storage at the end of deer season. Then the cameras are never touched again until July when it is time to start scouting again. If that is the case you are missing out. Trail camera photography can be an exciting hobby to fill the void during the off season.

Many people just hang the camera around a tree over looking a bait pile and that is it. Much more planning should take place when setting up a trail camera. The number 1 rule should be face the camera in any direction except east or west. This is especially true during the winter months when the sun is low in the sky. If you face the camera south east you will get pictures of sun flares. The same is true in the evening. Don't risk missing those great daytime photo chances and be sure to point your camera north if possible. Trail Camera Resources
