Dog Problems?

If you have ever own a dog, you would know they cause so much trouble without training! I have 3 golden retrievers and a black poodle, so I know what I am talking about!

After training them for 4 years now, I kind of catch on. And so here I am, sharing what I have learned so far. And I don't believe people have to pay for these tips, at least the basic ones. Please, read on!

The Types Of Dog Training

The most important and the most basic concept to grasp when you are training a dog is to understand that when you "train" your dog you are simple communicating to it. Just like any kind of communication, an effective one is need for you to succeed.

Now, I'm going to show you 3 types of dog training. There are different kind of training because as your grow, they need different kinds of communication. This is important.

1. For puppies or dogs who have never received any training, this is the most important training they must go through. It's called.... well, basic training. This training teaches it to sit, stay, come and how to get along with other dogs.

2. As your dog grows and mastered basic tricks, he can then advance to the next step. You can then teach them heeling (follow you), fetch, etc.

3. Most people stop there. I certainly stop there. You dog should be pretty obedient by then. But if you want to progress to more advanced tricks like walking on hind legs, then this next type of training is what it needs. I personally hire a dog training expert. (whom has contributed to this lens but for some reason do not want his name to be mentioned)

For every kind of training, there must be a motivation for the one being trained. Employee who are being trained at work, for example, is motivated with a pay raise or.... the fear of getting fired.

But for dog training, never use the-cane-approach. Only use positive reinforcement, meaning the carrot approach.

Before You Start Training

As far as I hate to say this to you, there is NO magic that you can do to train your dog overnight. Period. Training a puppy, like all other work, is hard. It requires patience, perseverance and more patience. But just like the work that you do, training your puppies also gives you a lot of satisfaction (at least I hope so).

So these methods I'm sharing must be implemented consistently. Depending on your puppy's individual "IQ" and your skill as a trainer, it may take a few days or it may take a few months. With that out of the way, let's dig in!

The first thing you must know is that your puppy is totally and absolutely reliant on you. Just like a baby. Use a lot of positive reinforcement like praise and rewards. Start training from day 1 until your puppy masters the skills consistently but keep it short.

I can't emphasize this more: NO punishment ever! You will only distance yourself from your puppy. It will be afraid of you! (Just to sidetrack, this is the same principle to treat your children)

Training Where To Chew

Have you ever lost anything to your puppy's chewing problems? I have! I lost a $200 shoes! What I didn't realize at that time was this simple yet potent fact: if you don't want your puppy to chew on it, then don't give it access! So that's the first step. Hide your things.... or at least make it inaccessible to your puppy.

Give your puppy a chewing toy AND praise it for chewing the toy. Do this 2 weeks or so and you can gradually return your things to their normal spots. Let your puppy have access to your things but prevent it from chewing on it. Continue praising it when it chew on its toy.

As a safety precaution and accelerate learning, what you can do is use taste deterrent like bitter apple on your things that are in danger.

Toilet Training Your Puppies

Toilet training is the first thing you must train your puppy on. It cab get really messy and frustrating if you don't do it as soon as possible.

Rest assured though that the puppy will not wet its own bed like a baby would. Dogs are born with a mindset not to dirty their living quarter. Therefore the trick is to make your puppy think your living quarter is also its quarter. However, don't expect it to master toilet training anytime soon! It has to be at least about 4 months old before he can be toilet trained. This is because when it's 1 month old, it can only "hold it" for 2 hours. (age in months +1)

Therefore while waiting your puppy to mature and save yourself some frustration, always keep your puppy where it can go anytime it wants when you are not there to look at him.

So now you know approximately when he's going to need to go. Take your puppy out to the field every time the time is close and wait for it to go. Don't play with it and ignore your puppy's constant begging. What this does is your puppy will then be more interested in sniffing around for a place to go than play with you.

If it goes, reward it and if it goes at the wrong place, close an eye and pretend you didn't see it.

Socialization For Puppies

And A Reference For The Rest Of Us!

When a puppy reaches your home, it is critical that you show it acceptance. And you have to get your point across fast, generally before it is 16 weeks old.

At this stage your puppy should already by trained with the basics such as chewing and toilet training. Remember to spend time with it. Stroke and often give it some kind of physical contact. Physical contact is very important in developing a relationship. (same goes to your human to human relationship, especially infants) Talk to it, and involve it in as many as things that you do as possible. Play with it.

If you don't have time for all those, ask someone to replace you. Be warned that if that replacement spends more time with your puppy than you do, your puppy might listen to him/her more than it obeys you! If you don't have time and no replacement, please do yourself, the puppy and all the goodness in this world a favor: DO NOT BUY A PUPPY. I see way too many such cases. Some rich busy people bought a puppy and left it alone!

Moving on, you can bring it out for a walk to meet strangers, other pets and other people's dogs only when final vaccinations is done. Before that, keep your puppy safe. Invite friends over to your house, or you can bring your puppy to your friend's house. Let you puppy play with other dogs that you know is safe.
