Baseball Training

Baseball is as hot as ever and if you want to succeed you have to be on top of your game.  Multi-sport athletes are a thing of the past.  Now, athletes specialize in one sports and many times that sport is Baseball.  Like the old saying goes, "practice makes perfect", and if you want to stand out you need to play hard, and practice harder.

Baseball Training - Developing Arm Strength

Arm strength is very important no matter what position you play. However, not everyone is blessed with a strong arm. The #1 method for improving arm strength is "long toss". Long tossing is proven to increase arm strength pitchers and position players.

Key points to remember when long tossing:

1. Warm up properly and thoroughly
2. Maintain a loose arm action
3. Keep good mechanics even as distance increases

A sample long toss routine:

  • Warm up thoroughly with arm exercises, stretching, and light throwing before increasing your throwing distance.

  • Start at about 90 feet and work your way back from there

  • Make 7-10 quality throws at each increment

  • Increase your distance in 10-15 feet increments

  • Max distance is reached when you can no longer reach your partner on the fly with a loose arm action

  • After your final throw at max distance, begin to increment back in 10-15 feet each time.

  • Make 2-3 quality throws at each increment in

  • Once you reach your starting distance again, make a final 5-10 quality throws

  • Finish the routine with cool down stretching and arm exercises

Baseball Training - Developing Bat Speed

One area that many players neglect when it comes to building bat speed are the abdominal muscles, specifically rotational exercises. Remember that your body is a chain and you want it to work efficiently as a whole. Rotational power and torque helps to supply speed to the bat head by providing speed to the arms.

The other muscles that help provide bat speed are your forearms. They help to whip the bat through the zone, providing greater bat speed.

Baseball Training - Speed and Strength Exercises

Baseball is not an endurance sports. I don't know why coaches continue to have there players train like it is. Baseball is performed in bursts. You stand still then explode. There is no continuous movement like there is in soccer or basketball.

Here are some exercises to help you perform faster and stronger

  • Jump Squat: Squat down and then explode, jumping as high as you can. Land softly, reset, and do it again. Perform 3 sets of 10 repetitions. These are not continuous rest briefly and reset in between each rep.

  • Power Pushup: Start in the bottom position of a pushup. Forcefully push up off the ground. Your hands should leave the ground and then absorb the impact on the way back down. Perform 3 sets of 3-5 repetitions. Reset after each rep.

These are not fatiguing exercises that is why you reset after each rep. They are designed to work on power and explosion, not endurance.

Baseball Training - Hitting Off A Tee

I bet when you finished tee-ball you thought you would never have to use that thing again. You are definitely mistaken. The tee is one of the greatest hitting tools to this day, just ask Tony Gwynn. The tee provides instant feedback on how you are making contact with the ball.

The majority of hitters struggle to hit the outside pitch. The tee is a great tool for teaching the outside pitch. It teaches you to keep your front shoulder in and drive the ball to the opposite field.

In order to practice hitting various locations you have to set the tee at the proper locations. When trying to hit the outside pitch set the tee deeper in the zone. The farther out the pitch, the deeper in the zone you want to make contact. When trying to learn the inside pitch, set the tee in front of the plate. You want to make contact earlier in the zone.
