Into The Realm of Training and Development
This lens is a mashed up blog, notebook, and all around journal from a training and development officer in one of the IT service provider companies in the Philippines.
Explore and share your thoughts on training and employee development. I have to admit I am just a newbie in this area, so excuse me for my eagerness.

Who Am I?
A short introduction to the lensmaster's professional background
As part of its reorganization, the company created new positions to distribute the duties and responsibilities that were held by a few people in the management. As a result I was promoted to the HR Manager position, which was nonexistent before.
My primary work involves talent acquisition. In simple terms: recruitment. The other special tasks in the HR department were not distributed well. Later on another opportunity came up and I decided to specialize into training. My work load lightened up and I was able to produce better work output than before.
Thoughts on Training
a bloggy sort of module... changes every time I update...
In the workplace, it is less desirable to institute a classroom-type of training. Adults, especially ones with the right skills and the formidable intelligence, can learn better when they are not being "told" what to do. Rather show them how things are done with instructions delivered in a step-by-step process.
This method is most effective when demonstrated visually. This is why how-to videos are more popular than how-to manuals and DIY ebooks. One of those video sites that offer high quality instructional videos is MonkeySee.com

Clippings and snippets on learning and training
Efficiency can be defined as a reasonable or optimum amount of work done the easiest and most economical way.
Factors related to efficiency at work
- adequacy of training
- characteristics of machines
- motivation and related conditions at work
- degree to which work performance is free from fatigue
Cited from PSYCHOLOGY APPLIED TO BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY, 3rd Ed. Philippines. National Bookstore. 1997.
Training for maximum efficiency involves much more than instilling the correct behavior pattern for a particular operation.
By looking at the records of their performance, the trainees can observe the results of his efforts and note where improvements are needed.
Aspects of Total Efficiency
To become efficiency-minded, an employee must keep 3 aspects in view as general objectives:
1. Things-efficiency - learning work methods that save effort and time
2. Group-efficiency or social efficiency - this refers to how well a person works with a group. Also covers feelings of belongingness to the organization.
3. Self-efficiency or self-development - to qualify for a higher position
Characteristics of an efficient worker
An efficient worker:
- does not need to be shown every detail
- learns the job quickly
- works without needing close supervision
- works regularly on the job, does not give alibis or excuses and is always on time
- finds ways to do his work better
- has the attitude of cheerfulness and is cooperative
- shows seriousness in his work
Lessons Learned
A worker at any job learns through either trial and error or copying the traditional way as demonstrated by the trainer or co-workers.
