Train Sets for Kids! Fun for all!

Everybody loves a train set!

Do you remember your first train set? I certainly do. Mine was a wind-up Mickey Mouse train. It was a gift from Santa. We moved that year to Clemson, SC, and somehow the train got lost. I can remember being so upset that my dad drove me back to Ware Shoals to look for it. We never did find that little train.

When our son was about 3 years old, Santa brought him his first train. And last year at Christmastime, our grandson received his first train set, complete with a train table! What a marvelous invention - that train table!

Generations of children have enjoyed trains! Is it time for a new train at your house?

Or maybe this year is the year to build your own train table!

So pretty under the Christmas tree!!

One of the reviewers suggest adding the optional 9.6v battery pack. If you have small children who will be continuously running the train, I would think the battery pack would be a requirement. The little ones will adore this Christmas train!

The Earliest Train Sets

Information from Wikipedia about Toy Trains

Lionel's first train, the Electric Express, was not intended for sale to consumers, but rather, as a storefront display. Delivered in 1901, it ran on a brass track and was powered by a battery and a motor Cowen originally intended to use in an electric fan. Cowen hoped to use the public's fascination with railroads and electricity to capture the public's attention and direct it to the goods for sale. Members of the public started approaching store owners about buying the trains instead, prompting Lionel to begin making toy trains for the general public. Lionel ended up selling 12 examples of the Electric Express.[2]

Model trains thrill all ages
"A lot of people think of model railroading as a man's hobby," said Steve Sandifer, a member of the San Jacinto Model Railroad Club Inc. "But we have a lady member, Leslie Eaton, who has been named a Master Model Railroader by the National Model ...
Working on the train terrain, club shows off its new layout
?I just got back into it, it's nice to have a hobby when you suddenly have time on your hands,? Tietz said. He said the obvious benefit of belonging to a model train club is that the display is so much bigger than most anything built in a private home.
Drones, Trains and Automobiles
It is important to note, however, that UAVs are not typical remote controlled planes found at a hobby store. They are highly sophisticated pieces of equipment that pack a technological punch comprised of advanced software and avionics.

    Great stuff Bev,
I think there is a train style for all personality types like you mentioned here. I have never met anyone that didn't like some sort of train whether it was fast, historical, or even Thomas.
    Thanks,
    Max

When my second daughter was born and I called to tell my oldest daughter that she had a new little sister (she was 3 at the time), she was terribly upset. "Noooo!" she cried. "Take her back, I want a baby brother!". As the conversation went from bad to worse...I discovered she wanted a brother because they play with trains. So, Daddy went right out and bought her a toy train so that she would love her little sister.

I have searched everywhere and cant find the set! A guy on e-bay had the trains but not the platform that they ran on! HELP! from early sixties!

Great lens. I built a rather splendid train set as a child: Rather than move house my parents built a new bigger bedroom for me on top of the garage and before the roof was put on a huge board, too big to go through a door, was lowered in and attached to the walls, taking up almost half of the room. I installed my train set on the huge board, complete with landscape, tree and animals etc.

    Great lens!

I remember the first train set my sister and I received for Christmas. It wound up and had smoke come out of the smoke stack.

Great lens - particularly enjoyed the videos you posted - the attention to detail in the trainsets is unbelievable. The books you've recommended also look interesting - I'll have to check them out. I've just started a new Toy Model Trains blog which I intend to update regularly - you might want to check it out if you get a chance.

    Many thanks,

Great lens! Our 4 year old grandson LOVES trains - Thomas the Tank Engine books, DVD and on TV --- when he's playing he sets up all the little quadruplet babies' chairs in a row so they can be part of the train and he is the "train driver". Love the lens.

My son loved Thomas the Tank Engine when he was younger - I used to watch the show with him and his many videos. Love this lens for reminding me of this time we used to share.
