Having a well-behaved Puppy or Dog

You have returned home with a brand new puppy and the family is excited. So is the little critter! And puppies have a problem holding it all in when they are excited so chances are he will tinkle on the floor.
If you belong to the old school and want to hurt your puppy, you grab him and rub his nose in it!! Sorry, but in my opinion, this is outdated and shows absolute ignorance of dog and puppy behaviour.
Instead, take the puppy outside to an area where you want him to do his business and stay with him there until he has tinkled some more. As soon as he does this, praise him lots. Make a real big fuss of him.
The trick is to know that dogs and puppies do not want to soil their living quarters. Pay attention and you will find that the puppy tinkles in places not commonly used by or seldom used by family members. It is an instinct they are born with and if you understand this principle and the way in which their digestive system works, toilet training will be a breeze!
First thing in the morning (and this is morning, not mid morning), take the puppy outside to his toilet area and stay with him until he has done his business. then you make a fuss of him again and take him back inside. give him breakfast and 10 minutes after he has finished his breakfast, take him outside again.
I know what you are thinking, "Geez, all this running in and out!" but it is important to remember that puppies have small bladders and stomachs and not fully developed digestive tracts and they will need to go more often while they are young.
I also find it useful to remind people of the work involved in having a baby. Having a puppy isn't much different. They need a lot of attention and a lot of work and if you want a dog you can take anywhere without embarrassment, you will need to put in the hard work in the early days.
