Transfer a Group to a new Groupmaster

Since Groups have been transferred over to Lenses there's no need for these special instructions anymore. Instead I'll leave it as a resource for people looking to find old groups.

The original intro:
So you started a group, and it's done so well that it grew to be more than you could handle. Have no fear you can transfer your group to someone new! Now, for some reason there isn't an explanation easily accessible on how to transfer a group properly.  You would expect it to go smoothly, and it can, if you follow the steps below.

Want to find an Old Group?

If you'd like to search for old groups you can do so at Squiddicted.com. You'll see this custom search box on the right side of the page:

The next few modules are now outdated, but I hate to delete Squidoo history.

First Thing's First

Decide who will take over as Groupmaster and accept the group into their care forevermore. They should probably have a lens or more in the group already so they have some vested interest. Do you have someone in mind already? Super. If not, just head on over to the forums at SquidU and start a thread to let people know it's up for grabs. Say it in as few or as many words as you want.

Setting them as an Administrator

Once you decide who the lucky Squid is make sure you set them as an Administrator before you try to transfer the lens. If you don't they will not be able to access the group's management pages. If you forget it can be fixed, but it can take weeks of waiting and you feel horrible about bothering the Squid Staff.

Not sure how to set someone as Admin?

Go into "My Groups" and under "Groups you run" click on "Manage this group". On the Group Administration page click on "Manage Members". Find the person you want to select and click on "Promote".

Ready to Transfer your Group

Make sure you are in touch with the groupmaster-to-be because you will need their email address to transfer the group to them.

Ok, you have them set as Admin, and you have their email address. What now?

Go to your dashboard. This is a bit counter-intuitive since your groups are not listed on your dashboard, but trust me ;) You will see a little text link "Transfer A Lens" under the Don't miss this tool! heading on the left side of your screen. Click on that and you will be taken to the Transfer page. There is a pulldown menu titled "Lens name:" Scroll down until you see the name of the group you want to give away and select it. Enter the email address you've already got handy, post a little comment and hit send.

Beginning Group Transfer

You've done your part

Now it's in their hands. The person you have chosen will receive an email from Squidoo with a link for them to accept the group as their own. Hopefully they have already agreed or you will have to do this all again with the next person LOL.

Group Transfer Confirmation

You can ask them to remove you as admin so you will no longer be in charge in any way. If they ask how to do that send them to the same place you promoted them (Manage Members). They can demote you and you will become a regular member.

Disclaimer:

I should tell you that I have never transferred a group to someone. I have been on the receiving end four times so far and with two there were bumps in the road. The first time I had no idea what was going wrong and was searching for answers for weeks, the second time I was a bit better prepared, by the third I had it down pat, and the last one was transferred minutes after the previous owner asked for a replacement. I've started this lens to help so that no one has to flounder around again. :D
