In Transformers, the Earth is caught in the middle of an intergalactic war between two races of robots, the heroic Autobots and the evil Decepticons, both of which are able to disguise themselves as cars, trucks, planes and other technological creations. Dreamworks and Executive Producer Steven Spielberg present an ambitious sci-fi film from action director Michael Bay, based on the popular Transformers toyline and cartoon series, which has returned in numerous incarnations since its early 80's debut.

Transformers Crew

Director
Michael Bay
With films like The Rock and Armageddon, Michael Bay's films are known for full-throttle action with an edgy sense of humor. Bay also directed Pearl Harbor and The Island, and his photogenic action scenes should show-off the Transformers in stunning realism on the big screen.
"This is by far the most action I have ever put into a movie - I have 12 huge set pieces." --Michael Bay's Blog

Executive Producer
Steven Spielberg
Steven Spielberg's children grew up with Transformers in the 80's, and the acclaimed director of such films as Jaws, E.T., and Saving Private Ryan became a fan of the transforming robots himself.
"We're going to make the best (Transformers movie) first because we want the best one to inspire everybody to not only play with these toys but to want to know about the further adventures of all of these characters, both human and machine alike." --Spielberg's 2006 Comic-Con preview

Writers
Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci (Mision Impossible III)
"We always modeled Optimus Prime after King Arthur," says Transfomers co-writer Alex Kurtzman. "His design (from the '80s toys and cartoon) was so iconic we couldn't make too many changes."

Differences from Toys to Live-Action Movie

Cinematic Transformations

Not only does Transformers challenge its film-makers with the task of turning an incredible concept into reality, but how to adapt the clever ideas behind the original Transformers toys into realistic entities for the new movie.

One of the earliest curiousities was how Bumblebee, traditionally a VW Bug, became a Chevy Camaro for the movie. There had been talk that VW declined to license the vehicle. In 2005, GMC invited Michael Bay to select any of their designs he wanted at no cost to the movie studio, and one-million dollars worth of GMC vehicles are used. There are still a few more motor companies involved. Optimus Prime was a flat-nosed semi in the original toyline. In the new movie he's a Peterbilt with an extended nose. Designers have said this design makes Prime taller. One of the more unexpected changes is that Optimus Prime reveals a mouth underneath his face shield. Perhaps the biggest challenge was Megatron, the Decepticon leader who transformed into a Walther P-38 handgun. In the animated Transformers, sometimes other Decepticons would hold the gun and shoot it. The makers of the Transformers movie could not realistically explain mass-shifting like Megatron's, and didn't find the handgun mode to be useful in telling a compelling story. Megatron will remain a Cybertronian jet fighter in the new movie, with no Earth disguise. The exploitation of Megatron by a secret government agency to reverse-engineer new technology is an important plot element.

While vehicles may have been updated, the writers were dedicated to keeping the same personalities and motives that made each Transformer unique in the toyline and animation, and keeping the spirit of the Transformers alive on the big screen.
