Trashcan Sinatras --- The Best Band You've Probably Never Heard Of
The Trashcan Sinatras have been playing together for over 20 years, yet it seems that very few people have ever heard of them. And that's a colossal shame, both for them and for the public at large. With any luck, that may change, as they have a fine new album--their fifth--released in the North American market as of April 27th (earlier released in Japan and the UK) called "In The Music".
Their first three albums ("Cake", "I've Seen Everything" and "A Happy Pocket") are difficult to find, and when you do, they are usually rather expensive. Your best bets are eBay, and Amazon. However, the good news is that all of these albums plus their fourth album "Weightlifting" will be re-released sometime around summer's end/the beginning of autumn--more on that later!

History, Part 1
Could I interest you in a little something special
Their first album "Cake" in 1990 featured their debut single and ultimately their biggest worldwide hit single, "Obscurity Knocks". Other songs on the album that received air-play mainly on college and alternative stations were "Only Tongue Can Tell" and "Circling the Circumference". Their second album "I've Seen Everything", released in 1993, contained the singles "Hayfever" and the title track.
History, Part 2
The hairy years (or: Your time is up, so shut-up)
TCS were forced to declare bankruptcy and thus maintained a low profile for a few years. No concerts were performed until 1999 (Japan and Ireland). At around the same time, they recorded the single "Snow", which was a cover of a Randy Newman song, but this was only released in Japan.
History, Part 3
Welcome back
The Trashcans spent the better part of the next 4 years writing songs , recording demos, and finally laying down the tracks for their fourth album "Weightlifting". In preparation for the release in August 2004, the band spent the first part of that year performing at more live venues after having spent the previous few year doing few live appearances. They continued to tour through 2006 in support of the album.Their fifth album, "In the Music", was released in the US at the end of April 2010. TCS had toured North America extensively since then in support of the album, and are currently on a month-long acoustic tour (March).

Selected videos of singles and album cuts from the beginning to present time
Featured Video of the Week -- 31 August 2010
The band plays a cover of the Beatles' "Hello Goodbye" in an advertisement for Narita Airport in Tokyo, Japan--the very same airport Paul McCartney was busted for pot possession back in 1980. Coincidence?
Cake (1990) -- First Album

Obscurity Knocks
1st single from debut album "Cake"
The official video for this song was removed from YouTube by Universal Music Group, so this live appearance on a UK variety show will have to suffice. What's with the alien puppet host? Great catchy example of late '80's Brit-pop. Regretfully, the title "Obscurity Knocks" has been unjustly prophetic as success (as defined by wealth and popularity) for the Trashcan Sinatras has not been forthcoming.
Only Tongue Can Tell
2nd single from debut album "Cake"
This is the song that first turned me on to the Trashcan Sinatras and made me go out and buy Cake, their first album (1990). They used to play this video quite a bit on an MTV-knockoff show that was aired on our local public access channel back in the early '90s. For some reason unknown to me now, it took me a really long time to figure out that they were saying "shin-deep in cement and sand" at the 2:27 mark. I'm not sure what I thought they were saying, but it sounds clear now.
Circling the Circumference
3rd single from debut album "Cake"
High energy song from the Cake album. No official video was released for this song, but thankfully a fan has placed an audio recording on YouTube (accompanied by the photo of the band shown below).
Funny
from "Cake"
"She doesn't play the field / But she likes to know the strength of the team."
I've Seen Everything (1993) -- Second Album

Hayfever
1st single from "I've Seen Everything" (second album)
Very rich sounding recording, and a classic example of the tendency of the Trashcan Sinatras to create songs that don't adhere to the standard "verse-chorus-bridge" structure of pop music. "I've had women, I've had germs / They're eerie, wild and wailing and seductive in small doses". I'm not sure what that means, but I like it.
This video gained the Trashcans a measure of fame when it was featured on the "True Crime" episode of Beavis and Butthead during the segment where they watch music videos and make juvenile comments (see next video). Butthead said he had "a bad feeling about this video", and then stated that the Trashcan Sinatras were "just another bunch of British mama's boys". No such thing as bad publicity, eh?

Beavis and Butthead critique the Trashcans
"True Crime" episode
Here is the last 10-or-so minutes of the Beavis and Butthead episode "True Crime", which features the Hayfever video along with the duo's snarky comments (at around 9:37).
"Where is Britain?"
"Uhhh, I think it's like, somewhere near England."
"Yeah--that's where everybody talks like a wuss."

I've Seen Everything
2nd single and title track of "I've Seen Everything" (second album)
The official video, like the one for "Obscurity Knocks", has been removed from YouTube at the request of Universal Music Group. In lieu of that, here is a fine live rendition. Nice anthemic sort of sound to this one.
Bloodrush
3rd single from "I've Seen Everything" (second album)
Medium-fast-tempo with brilliant chiming guitar in the chorus. "Don't let my blood rush in vain" is a perfect example of the sort of clever word-play the band has been known for (vain = vein, get it?).
Send For Henny
track from "I've Seen Everything"
Great crowd-pleaser when played live. Who exactly is Henny? It doesn't matter. Nice chord progression in the verses.
Earlies
track from "I've Seen Everything"
John Douglas takes a turn at singing lead in the lovely "Earlies", which closes out the album "I've Seen Everything". I've always thought this sounded a bit like "Sentimental Lady" (either the old Fleetwood Mac version or the later one by ex-Fleetwood Mac guitarist Bob Welch).
A Happy Pocket (1996) -- Third Album

The Main Attraction
1st single from "A Happy Pocket" (third album)
No video was made for this single (at least one that I could find), and no live concert clip is available either. However, the band's website has an audio streaming function with several live concert audio recordings, including "The Main Attraction" (found here -- just scroll down the list of the songs on the audio player until you get to the "M"s). Take a listen to the other tracks as well!
Twisted and Bent
2nd single from "A Happy Pocket" (third album)
One of the best Trashcan Sinatras songs within the "Trash-canon". "The pirate in me turned a blind eye." -- Nice.
How Can I Apply...?
3rd single from "A Happy Pocket" (third album)
Very catchy melody that really should have been a hit. Great to noodle around with on the acoustic guitar. The line in the song is "how can I apply to you?", so they just abbreviated the title. Personally, I would have eliminated the "dot-dot-dot-question mark" as it looks a little weird, but that's just me.
To Sir With Love
4th single from "A Happy Pocket" (third album)
A rendition that is more soulful and melancholy and less poppy than the original Lulu version. I personally love the final minute and a half (3:15 until the end) of instumental work and vocal "ahhs". Scenes from the Trashcan Sinatras' promotional short film "Spooktime" make up a large portion of this video. "Dinnae kick the wall, son...."
The Genius I Was
track from "A Happy Pocket"
One of the most under-appreciated songs from one of the most under-appreciated bands on one of their most under-appreciated albums (even amongst TCS fans). Top notch song from start to finish--very rich musical production throughout, especially during the chorus.
Weightlifting (2004) -- Fourth Album

All The Dark Horses
Single from "Weightlifting" (fourth album)
Why this song wasn't a monster hit is a crying shame. Love the tension in the song that is created at 3:02, followed by the pretty electric guitar tremolo to resolve that tension. The Family Channel drama "Wildfire" used "All The Dark Horses" in it's pilot episode at the conclusion and (I believe) earlier in the episode as well.
It's A Miracle
track from "Weightlifting"
Live from the Troubadour in L.A. Simple yet elegant guitar solo from Paul Livingston. For the longest time I thought the lyric "knowing full well" was really "no worse for wear", which actually might be considered somewhat appropriate as well in the context of the song, if I do say so myself...
Weightlifting
Title track of the fourth album
This song is very cathartic and a fitting end to this album. "You will find a great weight lifting / Easing your mind -- a great weight lifting / just leave it behind -- a great weight lifting". I especially like the higher pitched "la la la"s in the chorus that form a counter-melody to the main chorus melody.
Wild Mountainside
Though not from the "Weightlifting" album, released as a single only in 2005
Listening to this simple song makes you think you're actually listening to an old Scottish folk ballad, but it's really a contemporary composition by Trashcan Sinatras guitarist John Douglas. So classic is the sound that John's partner Eddi Reader included it in her album "Eddi Reader Sings The Songs Of Robert Burns", even though it wasn't written by Burns. She also sang it in front of Queen Elizabeth II and the Scottish Parliament during the grand opening of the newly constructed Scottish Parliament Building in 2004.
Qwest commercial, 2006
Frank sings "Got To Get You Into My Life"
Anyone remember this Qwest commercial from 2006? You're hearing Frank Reader, lead singer from the Trashcan Sinatras, singing the Beatles' "Got To Get You Into My Life". This 1 minute spot has earned the band probably more money than any other musical endeavor they've taken on over the years, maybe even put together. Frank even said that it helped pay for a large chunk of their current album "In The Music".
In The Music (2009) -- Fifth Album

Oranges and Apples
1st single from "In The Music" (fifth album)
Mesmerizing tribute to the late Pink Floyd visionary Syd Barrett. Great gently-psychedelic instrumental work that makes up the final three and a half minutes of the song.
People
2nd single from "In The Music" (fifth album)
FREE HUGS! In the time since the description of the video was written by Trashcan Sinatras guitarist John Douglas, the two women in the video giving out the hugs have been located and identified, and were asked (and accepted) to attend one of the band's shows in Scotland recently.
Should I Pray
from the fifth album "In The Music"
The Trashcan Sinatras' producer on "In The Music", Andy Chase, is a neighbor of Carly Simon's on Martha's Vineyard. The band had asked him to try and persuade her to perform on the album. She heard "Should I Pray" and immediately wanted to add her voice to the recording. That's lead guitarist Paul Livingston wandering through the cemetery paying homage to guitarists (and others) who have passed on.
Morning Star
track from "In The Music"
This song has a riff that sounds very much like that of the 6-string Fender bass solo in Glen Campbell's rendition of "Wichita Lineman" by Jimmy Webb. In fact, the working title of this song was "The Jimmy Webb Song".
Astronomy
only released as an added track on the Japanese version of "In The Music"
Such a shame that this is only available on the "In The Music" album released in Japan.
In The Music -- 2010 Tour
Upcoming shows
North American tour has been completed; stay tuned for details on the UK tour this fall and acoustic US tour in the winter. I Like Your Poetry
Examples of clever word-play in the lyrics of Trashcan Sinatras songs
There is a line in the Trashcan Sinatras' first single, "Obscurity Knocks", where it is lamented how record industry executives at the start of their career would comment on their songs by saying, at least maybe not literally but in effect, "I like your poetry, but I hate your poems". TCS has long been known for their clever use of the English language in their lyrics, which are filled with puns, twists of word meaning, odd turns of a phrase, and other types of word play. Below is a representative but by no means complete list of such lyrical genius:
rubbing shoulders with the sheets till two
looking at my watch and i'm half-past caring
and the calendar's cluttered with days that are numbered
i'm on a b road heading for the sea
to see if hands across the ocean
shake or wave
listen son if you'd spent
your life in the last lane
you would have an accent to grind
rest in pieces
at the toss of a coin
i end up head in the dirt
and tail in the air
and if you don't give a damn
you're welcome to keep it
hands of the clock give me a round of applause
for getting out of bed
you came into my life like a brick through a window
and i cracked a smile
she says she doesn't like my style
but i loved her in my own fashion
long in the tooth and short on wisdom
so typical - a battle of wits
and i've come half prepared
i know all the ropes
but i haven't a hope
of pulling you back to me
and now i've swallowed my pride
i promise you i
couldn't eat another word
though i knew what argue meant
and i knew what punish meant
and i knew what embarrass meant
i never found out what achieve meant
over the moon and under the influence
you're out of sight and out of your mind
but i've seen them rehearsing, reversing the hearse in
i know you must try
to overtake the undertaker
every actor hides a heckle, doctor hides a jeckyl
all our love was made on sheets we'd left unmade
spread eagled illegally
summersaulted, autumn tumbled
should i embrace you
or embalm you?
beauty is sin deep
the pirate in me turned a blind eye
like the book that we've strummed,
we're dog-eared and well-thumbed
we don't fold the pages,
we know where our place is
if money talks,
i've pursed lips,
and i've left
my tongue at home
i'm pondering
which science
i'll leave my body to
i know i'm no better,
i know i'll know better
so long afternoons would go up in balloons
as we killed our time just watching it die
little bohemian lost his sheep
sssh it's so quiet, you could hear a name drop
it won't be very long till cliche guevara's home
