Best destinations in Umbria Italy
Do you want to visit a fascinating place in Italy that is full of history and culture? Travel to Umbria and you will be able to enjoy the best that Italian life has to offer. You can enjoy outdoor sports in an attractive setting, holiday breaks in a peaceful destination, as well as be attracted to its cultural and artistic heritage.
Umbria is located between Le Marche and Tuscany. It is in Italy's geographical center and its capital is Perugia (founded by the Etruscans). Just a few meters west of the capital city you will find Lake Trasimeno, the largest body of water in the area. Then, south of the lake are houses that are built with terracotta bricks instead of stone. This gives a unique look to the countryside. In between the Tuscan towns of Arezzo, Cortona and the Tiber valley, there is a wide area of wooded hills. The hills are covered with plenty of evergreen oak, which is the reason why Umbria is called "green heart" in the whole of Italy.
Sports oriented visitors will find a lot of activities in Monte Vettore (which is near Norcia), and Monte Cucco (which is above Gubbio) - these are areas for hand-gliding fanatics. You can also watch the Arab Horse Endurance competition which is held once a year. Or if you love kayaking or white water rafting you can head for Val Nerina (which is near Spoleto). You can also enjoy, winter skiing, pony trekking, nature and bird watching, country walking, and golf almost everywhere.
For art enthusiasts, you can go to the National Gallery in Umbria, with a great collection of paintings by Pinturicchio, Piero della Francesca, Fra Angelico, Gentile da Fabriano, Giotto, and Duccio. In the south, Citta della Pieve was the birthplace of the Umbrian painter Pietro Vannucci - who is also known as "Il Perugino." The Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi is a very famous tourist spot.
You will find plenty of good wine and food in Umbria. Taste smoked and fresh trout, as well as truffles in Val Nerina. Every autumn, wild boar's meat is turned into sausages and prosciutto. Also, Grechetto white wine and Montefalco red wine has an international reputation to be one of the best. All over the region, you will find plenty of olives growing - which is why Umbrian olive oil is widely recognized for its delicate flavor and low acidity.
Because of all this, it is no wonder why a sizeable population of holiday foreigners and residents are now living alongside hospitable and genial Umbrians. So the next time you travel, visit Umbria for a different yet memorable experience.

Amelia is an ancient city whose origins are lost in legend. Its birth dates from the sixth century BC and it's built entirely in cyclopean walls of considerable interest. Over the centuries it profitted by Roman and Medieval impact. Built on a rocky hill, Amelia dominates huge expanses of oaks and olive trees, continually exposed to the evocative sound of the "Tevere" River that flows at its foot.

Deruta
Deruta is a small umbrian town post on a hill and it has uncertain origins.
Recent archaeological finds testify an ancient history dating back to Neolithic but certain testimonies are dated back only to the medieval period.
Equally uncertain is the etymological origin of its name that probably derives from the Latin "diruta", whose meaning could be understood as ruined or steep.
Its history alternates many vicissitudes, from periods of devastation that date back to the struggle for the conquest of territories, including Perugia, to periods of relative stability.
In fourteenth century, under the lordship of the Visconti, the walls were restored and the center changed its appearance.
You can access to the ancient village through three gateways included in the defensive system. Recently, the city has stepped up the construction of facilities showing a growing interest in the tourism sector.

Passignano sul Trasimeno
Passignano on the Trasimeno rises on a promontory and leans out on the northern shore of the Lake Trasimeno. It offers an enchanting scenery to the visitors, the result of a perfect combination among nature, art and history. Its roots sink in distant times, to the epoch of the Etruschis and the Romans and subsequently the territory hosted the Goths, the Longobardis and the Byzantines. The suburb has a typically medieval structure fortified by walls of defence with doors and towers, still today visible, among which Tower of West that keeps the coat of arms of the Municipality. The most important architectural monuments date back to different historical periods and therefore they differ stylistically. Some churches have a Romanesque plant, dating back to 1000, while others present four-sixteenth-century styles. The location is the ideal destination for lovers of aquatic sports and is home of the organization Park Trasimeno.

Todi

Todi is a town whose origins blend legend and history.
According to an ancient story it was built by the Umbrians, a population that lived in the valley of the River Tevere.
During the works of construction on the banks of the river, an eagle dragged the tablecloth, where men were eating, on the top of the hill. This was considered a sign of destiny, so they continued the construction of the city in that place. But the reality is different from the legend.
Todi was built by the Etruscans between the third and first century BC. Probably the name is a reference to its geographical position.
From latin "tutere" which means border, it points out that the city borders with the territory of the Etruscans. It has a typical medieval structure, with a castle surrounded by walls and the land of rich landowners.
