Travel New York on the Cheap
As a first time visitor to New York, I enjoyed it so much about it that I would like to share with you how to get the best discounts on travel, food, broadway tickets, and attractions. If you are going to be a first time visitor to New York, I hope you go through this lens and you will be to save a few hundred bucks by following my advice.
HOW TO GET CHEAP BROADWAY TICKETS
TKTS the best kept secret for cheap Broadway Tickets
TKTS BOOTHIf you go to New York and did NOT have time to purchase tickets in advance, the best way to get discounted tickets is to go to a place called TKTS. They have three of these booths in New York. You can get up to 50% off Broadway tickets by going here. They are usually very good seats, although you do not have the opportunity to pick. This was created by the Theater Development Fund to help support theater and to enable more audiences to be able to afford theater tickets.
Here are the locations (SEE GOOGLE MAP BELOW):
Times Square
Monday - Saturday: 3pm - 8pm
Sundays: 3pm until one-half hour before the latest curtain time being sold.
For matinee performances: Wednesdays and Saturdays: 10am - 2pm Please note: no evening tickets are sold from 10am to 2 pm at Times Square.
West 46th Street between Broadway and 8th Avenue
South Street Seaport
For same-day evening and next day matinee performances:
Monday - Friday: 11am - 6pm
Saturday: - 11am - 6pm
Sunday: 11am - 4pm
At the corner of Front and John Streets,
Downtown Brooklyn
For same-day evening and next day matinee performances:
Monday - Friday: 11am - 6pm
Jay Street and Myrtle Street Promenade.
One bad thing is that most of the time, you have to watch these plays the same day or the next day.
The only other BAD thing about this is that most of the time they DO NOT have discounted tickets for Disney plays like the Lion King or Little Mermaid. I guess these are very high in demand. On occassion you may get such tickets if you are lucky. I would highly recommend you sign up for their newsletter and it will list you what's available in the TKTS South Street Seaport and TKTS Brooklyn

TKTS/ SOUTH STREET SEAPORT
Cheap Tickets. Downtown. Who knew? The best part of all: the TKTS line at the South Street Seaport opens earlier, has shorter lines and offers discounts to the same shows as the line in Times Square. Playbill knows where to take you to get the best seats at the best prices for your favorite Broadway shows. Just follow the Playbill Video crew to the end of the Island.

Playbill Club discounts range from 10% - 50% off on Broadway, Off-Broadway, Opera, and even some Restaurants and Hotels. You can print the tickets and take them directly to the box office.Theatermania and its discount club TM Insider is another website to look out for when you try to purchase discount broadway tickets. Tickets are usually same day performances and you may be able to receive up to 40% discount. You print out the reservation confirmation for the tickets and go to the box office two hours in advance to pick up the
tickets.
Hitshowclub is another website with discount tickets and free membership.
Try all three services above, they are free to join. They may offer different discounts or promotions at different times.
YET ANOTHER WAY TO WATCH BROADWAY FOR CHEAP
If you don't mind taking chances, you may try to apply for standing room only or Rush tickets. Rush tickets are usually for students and they usually two can be purchased with one ID (If you are not a student, just grab one from the streets :).Standing room only tickets is exactly that, you will have to stand during the play.
Usually these tickets need to be purchased with cash, so come prepared. Here is a listing of all the broadway plays that offer standing room or student rush tickets.
HARD TO FIND TICKETS
Sometimes Broadway tickets are hard to find, and the only alternative may be trying to get legit tickets from someone else who already bought them but want to sell them. Stubhub is owned by Ebay and one of the more popular places to purchase tickets. You can check if there is a Stubhub fan promo code or Stubhub promotional code to get additional discounts. TRAVEL CHEAPER USE THE SUBWAY
New York has one of the most efficient modes of getting around if only you use it! There are many reasons you should be using their subway system. IT is fast, cheap and can take you almost anywhere! You can get a ONE DAY Fun Pass and is is good for unlimited subway and local bus rides from first use until 3 a.m. the following day. If you plan to be in New York for a while, there is also a 7-Day Unlimited Ride MetroCard for $25 that lets you take unlimited rides for 7 days. When I visited New York, I had some hesitation using the subway since I was so unfamiliar with it. The best advice I can give you is to purchase the map I list below (only about $8). I found that this map was really great because not only does it fit in your pocket, but it will show you all the subway stations, all the street names and all the great attractions. I really could not do without it. You will eventually find out that although there are many different subway trains, they have very similar routes (the N and the W for example).
Why not take a taxi?
Although a taxi can be extremely convenient, it can also get very expensive. For example, if you take a taxi around Times Square, the taxi will move at a snail's pace. You will be charged for every minute that taxi stays idle. You can just imagine how much money you are losing. If you do elect to take a taxi, remember to always know your destination cross streets. New York taxi drivers may drop you very far off if you are not aware of the cross streets (that's what happened to me). Knowing the cross streets makes it easier for taxi drivers to find the intended location as well as it shows them that you are not an ignorant tourist ready to get taken in circles.

CHEAP NEW YORK ATTRACTIONS
To visit all the New York Attractions for cheap, there is only one thing I would recommend: The New York pass. This is all that you get with the new york pass:1. Entry to the most popular attractions including:
Statue of Liberty, Emprire State Building, Madison Square Garden Tour, Madame Tussaud's, Guggenheim Museum, Museum of Modern Art, and many more.
2. You get a guide book describing all the attractions, shops and restaurants. This itself is a great bonus. No need to purchase a separate guide book.
3. Skip the lines, you can get in the attractions faster.
4. Normally it would cost you $450 to see all the attractions without the new York Pass. With it you can get it for about $150.
In addition if you use coupon code nyp5pc2007, you will get an additional 5% OFF

Thanks for the great lens! We are hoping to make a trip up to the city in the fall and this will be explored intimately before then. I have a daughter who is starting college and will be in theater with and emphasis on music and dance. I will love being able to take her to more than one musical without taking out a second mortgage! Posted July 21, 2008 |
