A Little Bit About Me And My Travels.

Welcome Travellers, to 'Travel and Adventure'.

I have always been an avid watcher of travel shows and surfer of websites showing wonderful places from around the globe. As a child in Australia my family were always going away on driving holidays and I think that kicked off my obsession with looking at maps of far off places and wondering what it looked like and felt like to be there.

In 1997, I moved to a different state and completed a tourism course which led to me travelling to the United States and working in a ski resort in Lake Tahoe for the 97/98 season.

From there I travelled accross the U.S.A by car and bus with friends before flying out to the U.K.
Two weeks later, (which was way to short to see all that I wanted to see) and we were off to China for only a week (way too short again) before heading back to the beauty of Australia again.

I still have a passion for travel and maps (I love Google Earth now) and now share that joy with my wife and children.

This lens is for sharing my travels and anything else travel related that I come across online that I think will help and inspire people to travel and have a more adventurous life.

It is a great big world out there with so many fantastic places to see and things to experience and we are only going to live this life once, so I think that we all deserve to make it a fantastic one.

Enjoy your travels, Bill.

Work Experience USA, Camp Counsellors USA

This is the company that organised a job for me in America

Why not do something entirely new . . .a working adventure in the USA!

Camp Cousellors USA are a company that organise work visas and jobs in the USA for international students from all over the world. They have a Summer job program which offers work in Summer Camps and a Winter job program called Work Experience USA that offers work in Ski resorts.

These guys make the whole process easy, they were great to deal with and hooked us up with people that we would work and even live with before we even left the country.
These days they offer more than they did when I went through the program, when I did it you had to be a full time student. They now have a program for non students and have work programs in other countries in Europe and Asia as well.

I made some amazing friends in 1997/98 that I still keep in touch with today. I owe their friendship to the fact that Work Experience USA made it so easy for me to travel and work in the United States.

Lake Tahoe Sunset

Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is a large freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada mountains of the United States. It is located along the border between California and Nevada, west of Carson City, Nevada. Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America. Its depth is making it America's second-deepest, (Crater Lake, in Oregon, being the deepest at 1945 feet (594 m) deep).

The lake was formed about 2 million years ago and is a part of the Lake Tahoe Basin with the modern lake being shaped during the Ice Ages. It is known for the clarity of its water and the panorama of surrounding mountains on all sides. The area surrounding the lake is also referred to as Lake Tahoe, or simply Tahoe.

Lake Tahoe is a major tourist attraction for both California and Nevada. It is home to a number of ski resorts, summer outdoor recreation, and tourist attractions. Snow and skiing are a significant part of the area's economy and reputation. Mountain and lake scenery are attractions throughout the year. The Nevada side also includes large casinos. Highways provide year-round access from Reno, Carson City and Sacramento.

The United Kingdom

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern IrelandIn the United Kingdom and Dependencies, other languages have been officially recognised as legitimate autochthonous (regional) languages under the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. In each of these, the UK's official name is as follows:

*;

*;

*;

*;

* (commonly known as the United Kingdom, the UK, or Britain) is a sovereign state located off the northwestern coast of continental Europe. Created with effect from 1 January 1801 by the Act of Union, 1800, it was known as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland' until 1927.

The United Kingdom is an island country, spanning an archipelago including Great Britain, the northeastern part of Ireland, and many small islands. Northern Ireland is the only part of the UK with a land border, sharing it with the Republic of Ireland. Apart from this land border, the UK is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea, the English Channel and the Irish Sea. The largest island, Great Britain, is linked to France by the Channel Tunnel.

The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy and unitary state consisting of four countries: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. It is governed by a parliamentary system with its seat of government in London, the capital, but with three devolved national administrations in Belfast, Cardiff and Edinburgh, the capitals of Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland respectively. The Channel Island bailiwicks of Jersey and Guernsey, and the Isle of Man are Crown Dependencies which means they are constitutionally tied to the Monarch (King or Queen) but are not constitutionally part of the UK, though they are treated as part of it for many purposes including nationality.

The UK has fourteen overseas territories, all remnants of the British Empire, which at its height in 1922 encompassed almost a quarter of the worlds land surface, the largest empire in history. British influence can continue to be observed in the language, culture and legal systems of many of its former colonies.

The UK is a developed country, with the world's sixth largest economy by nominal GDP and the seventh largest by purchasing power parity. It was the world's first industrialised country and the world's foremost power during the 19th and early 20th centuries, but the economic cost of two world wars and the decline of its empire in the latter half of the 20th century diminished its leading role in global affairs. The UK nevertheless remains a major power with strong economic, cultural, military, scientific and political influence. It is a recognised nuclear weapons state and has the third highest defence spending in the world. It is a Member State of the European Union, a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, and is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, G8, G20, NATO, OECD, and the World Trade Organization.

People's Republic of China

The 'Peoples Republic of China (PRC) ( ), commonly known as China', is the largest country in East Asia and the most populous in the world with over 1.3 billion people, approximately one-fifth of the worlds population. It is a socialist republic (specifically a "people's democratic dictatorship" according to its constitution) ruled by the Communist Party of China under a single-party system, and has jurisdiction over 22 provinces, five autonomous regions (Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Tibet, Ningxia, and Guangxi), four municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, and Chongqing), and two highly autonomous special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau). The PRC's capital is Beijing.

At approximately 9.6 million square kilometres (3.7 million square miles), the People's Republic of China is the world's third or fourth largest country by total area,Area rank is disputed with the United States and is either ranked third or fourth. See List of countries and outlying territories by area for more information. and the second largest by land area. Its landscape is diverse with forest steppes and deserts (the Gobi and Taklamakan) in the dry north near Mongolia and Russia's Siberia, and subtropical forests in the wet south close to Vietnam, Laos, and Myanmar. The terrain in the west is rugged and high altitude, with the Himalayas and the Tian Shan mountain ranges forming China's natural borders with India and Central Asia. In contrast, mainland China's eastern seaboard is low-lying and has a 14,500-kilometre long coastline bounded on the southeast by the South China Sea and on the east by the East China Sea beyond which lies Taiwan, Korea, and Japan.

The ancient Chinese civilization?one of the world's earliest?flourished in the fertile basin of the Yellow River which flows through the North China Plain. For over 4,000 years, China's political system was based on hereditary monarchies (also known as dynasties). The first of these dynasties was the Xia (approx 2000BC) but it was later the Qin Dynasty who first unified China in 221 BC. The last dynasty, the Qing, ended in 1911 with the founding of the Republic of China (ROC) by the Nationalist Kuomintang (KMT). The first half of the 20th century saw China plunged into a period of disunity and civil wars that divided the country into two main political camps ? the Kuomintang and the Communists. Major hostilities ended in 1949, when the People's Republic of China was established in mainland China by the victorious Communists. The KMT-led Republic of China government retreated to Taipei, its jurisdiction now limited to Taiwan and several outlying islands. As of today, the PRC is still involved in disputes with the ROC over issues of sovereignty and the political status of Taiwan.

China's importance in the world today as a great power is reflected through its role as the world's third largest economy nominally (or second largest by PPP) and a permanent member of the UN Security Council as well as being a member of several other multilateral organizations including the WTO, APEC, East Asia Summit, G-20 and Shanghai Cooperation Organization. In addition, it is a recognized nuclear weapons state and has the world's largest standing army with the second largest defense budget.

Since the introduction of market-based economic reforms in 1978, China has become one of the world's fastest growing economies and the world's second largest exporter and the third largest importer of goods. China is currently the largest producer of most commodities.http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/opinion/edit-page/Top-Article-Without-Fear-Or-Favour/articleshow/5034350.cms The Times of India. The Beijing Experience!

A strange and wonderful city!

Myself and my travelling friend, Glen, arrived in Beijing, China in May 1998 without really researching the country too much! We did not know a single word of Chinese and only knew that we wanted to see The Great Wall Of China and Tiananmen Square in the few short days that we were in Beijing.

We were surrounded by eager taxi drivers as soon as we entered the terminal, so we picked one and asked him to take us to a good hotel in the city. Not long into our journey, we came to a toll gate on the freeway where the driver told us that it was 20 Yuan to pass. We gave him the money in two 10 Yuan notes and watched as he put one in his pocket and gave the other to the toll booth attendant. We let it go as it was still cheap to us.

We were taken to a very basic hotel with friendly staff that spoke very little English. We managed to learn a bit from them and got by with hand gestures. There was a building site next to us that seemed to be operational 24 hours a day. But the amazement of watching someone hanging off the edge of a bamboo scaffold cutting a pipe with a hacksaw, several stories off the ground, made up for the noise!

We grabbed a map from the hotel and decided that although a bit of a hike away, we were close enough to walk to Tiananmen Square and check it out. We set off and although the street names were in Chinese, figured that we could just count the intersections as we crossed them and turned. How wrong we were!

After walking for an hour or so and still not sure if we were close or not, we thought about heading back to the hotel but then noticed a Kinko Photocopier store across the road and down a bit. We recognised the store as being an American brand as we had recently been in the USA and seen the stores. Surely someone in there must speak English, we thought. The staff pointed us to the manager who was indeed an American. He told us some key phrases to use and wrote out some cards for us with both the English and Chinese version of helpful words and places on them.

These were a great help! We now only had to show them to Taxi drivers and they would be able to take us back to our hotel and to Tiananmen Square. (Which turned out to be some way off still). We caught a Taxi to Tiananmen Square and were amazed at the size of it. It was HUGE! There were people everywhere flying kites and standing below the the massive and famous picture of Chairman Mao at the entrance to the Forbidden City was amazing. We were not there long before we were approached by two young guys who asked us if we were American. We told them we were from Australia and their faces quickly lit up. One of them showed us a kangaroo badge that he had on his shirt.

They knew quite a bit about Australia and it turned out that they were students who wanted to practice their English by speaking with us. Apparently this happens fairly regularly with western tourists in the square. It was a great experience, just sitting on the ground in the middle of such a famous square for an hour or so talking to these two students about the differences in the politics and cultures of our countries.

A little while later in the Forbidden City I was approached by a man who grabbed me (in a friendly way) and pulled me in between his family. He then passed his camera over to Glen and came and stood back with me and his family as Glen took a happy snap of them with this strange white boy with long hair and a goatee beard. I can only guess what he tells his friends and family about me when he shows off his photo album.

One other strange thing we noticed while walking the streets of Beijing was that people would not look us in the eye as we passed them. They would always look down at our feet. This only happened when we were walking the streets. Maybe we walk funny or something?

The hotel staff booked a full day Great Wall of China tour for us, which was fantastic value at around 35 Aussie dollars at the time. It included stops at a Ming Dynasty Tomb which was fascinating, a Jade Factory which was even more fascinating as the creations that they made out of Jade were just simply amazing, a Restaurant for Lunch and a traditional Chinese Acupuncturist clinic, plus the Wall!

I was amazed at the size of the Great Wall, the steps were HUGE! I was disappointed though by the commercialisation of such a great man made wonder. There were stall holders on top of the wall itself and there was even a toboggan slide off the side which took you very rapidly back to the car park if you wished. It was also a bit disapointing to realise that most of the wall is in a very bad state and the only parts that are looked after are close to the roads where the tourists are taken.

But marvelling at this great feat of engineering and human endeavor made it definately something that I will never forget visiting and will hopefully get to visit again one day, this time with my wife and children.

I thouroughly recommend it and Beijing to anyone..

We chose not to check out this exhibition at the Great Wall Of China!

The Great Wall showing toboggan slide and souvenir stalls.

The Great Wall is sadly crumbling :-(

    Wow! You've had some wonderful travels! I love the pics. I'm in the process of selling all my possessions, buying an RV, and traveling across the US (and possibly going outside the US, if time permits--want to settle before September of 2009 for daughter's sake).

    I want to go EVERYWHERE and experience the connections of all different kinds of people! I love meeting others.

    Lots of love to you!
