TRAVEL & LIVING: GREECE

GREECE, officially Hellenic Republic, is a country situated on the southern end of the Balkan Peninsula. It is bordered by Albania, the former Yugoslav  Republic of Macedonia and Bulgaria to the north and Turkey to the east. The Aegean Sea lies to the east and south of mainland Greece, while the Ionian Sea lies to the west. Both parts of the eastern Mediterranean basin feature a vast number of islands. Greece lies at the juncture of Europe, Asia and Africa. It is heir to the heritages of classical Greece, the Byzantine Empire and nearly four centuries of Ottoman rule. Regarded as the cradle of western civilization and being the birthplace of democracy, western philosophy, the Olympic Games, western literature, political science, major scientific principles and drama, Greece has a particularly long and eventful history.

ATHENS

ATHENS, CAPITAL CITY OF GREECE

Athens is the capital city of Greece with a metropolitan of 3.7 million inhabitants. It is in many ways the birthplace of Classical Greece and therefore of Western civilization. Visitors today may be shocked to find a city nothing like they had imagined. A large, overwhelming proportion of the city and its nearest suburbs are subject to bad urban planning and unimaginative 1970s architecture. There are few green spaces in the central areas of the city and the urban sprawl does an injustice to the city's glorious past.

"Glyfada"

Athens today is ever evolving, forging a brand new identity for the 21st century, In Glyfada (50 minutes by tram from the center), there is the Sea turtle Rescue Society Archelon. They are volunteers who take care of injured Sea Turtles. There are also events at the Athens and Epidaurus Festival. It runs during the summer and offers a wide spectrum of events covering almost every taste.

Try to attend a performance at the ancient theater of Epidaurus - a truly unforgettable experience

HERAKLION ,CRETE

HERAKLION,CRETE

Heraklion is the major city and capital of the largest Greek island of Crete.

Its Archaeological Museum holds the remains of the 3,000-year old Minoan civilization, which grew around the near-by legendary palace of knossos, as well as Byzantine churches and a well-preserved Venetian wall and fortress from the 15th century. Don't miss Heraklion Summer Arts Festival - from June to September.

"Amoudara"
Amoudara, the city's beach area, a 3km strip of sandy beach with lots of cafes, bars and hotels and the site of "Technopolis", is a modern multiplex cinema and open-air theater. Horseback riding, experienced and amateur riders can ride at the beach of Karteros or take riding lessons at Ippikos Omilos Hrakliou, located 6km east of Heraklion, in Karteros. Rock climbing, visitors can climb on a 50-foot rock at the suburb of Karteros, east of Herklion. Safety equipment is provided but one can use his own gear too.

THESSALONIKI

THESSALONIKI

Thessaloniki is in the Greek district of Central Macedonia and with about a million inhabitants is the second biggest city in the country,

Thessaloniki is home to many museums, mostly archaelogical and ethnographic. It also has a very active nightlife, as a 2007 New York Time article calls it "Seattle of the Balkan".

FOODS & DRINKS

"Greek Cuisine"

"Souvlaki" "Horiatiki" "Skordhalia"
The traditional fast foods are gyros, roast pork or chicken and fixings wrapped in a friend pita; souvlaki, grilled meat on a skewer; and skordhalia, garlic mashed with deep-fried salted cod. For seafood, try the grilled octopus. Greek salad(called"country salad" locally, "Horiatiki") is a mix of tomatoes, cucumber, feta cheese and onion with some olives.

"Moussaka"
"Stifado" "Spetzofai" "Saganaki" "Paidakia"
Also consider: Moussaka; pastitsio, a variety of lasagne; stifado, pieces of meat an onion in a wine and cinnamon stew; spetzofai, grilled sausage with onion and peppers in wine; and saganaki, fried semi-hard cheese. Rack of lamb is also popular, known as Paidakia.
The french fries are also often made fresh in Greece and are a hidden secret in modern Greek cuisine.

"Baklava"

For dessert, ask baklava, tissue-thin layers of pastry with honey and chopped nuts.

"Greek Yogurt with honey"
Another must-try is yogurt with honey: Yogurts in Greece are really different from what you used to see.

"Tiropita""Horiatiko Psomi" "Spanakopita"
For breakfast, head to local bakeries(fourno) and try fresh tiropita, cheese pie; spanakopita, spinach pie; or bougatsa, custard-filled pie, or even a "horiatiko psomi". a traditional village type bread that is a household staple and very tasty on its own too.

FOODS & DRINKS PART.2

FOODS & DRINKS PART.2

"Greek Coffee"

A popular drink is a frappe made with instant coffee, water, sugar and sometimes milk. It is frothed and served over ice. Traditionally, coffee is prepared with the grounds left it. In Greece, it's only known as Greek coffee - "ellinikos kafes" or simply "ellinikos". It is a thick, strong black coffee, served in a small cup and either sweetened or unsweetened.

"Tsipouro"------>
In northern Greek, it is famous for "Tsipouro" Raki, which is the greek equivalent of Italian "Grapa". It is produced by boiling the remainings of the grapes after the wine has been squeezed off. It is quite strong (might vary between 35 and 40% of alcohol).

RESPECT & STAY HEALTHY

"RESPECT & STAY HEALTHY

  • Greeks rate politeness with the person's behavior and not their words. Furthermore, everyone is treated like a cousin. They use their hands to gesture a lot. Sometimes over emphasizing politeness in spoken language will only make the person dealing with you think you are pretentious.

  • Greeks take leisure very seriously; it is a work-to-live culture, not live-to-work. Don't take perceived laziness or rudeness harshly. Rather than fight it, just go along with it and laugh at the situation. It can be very frustrating at times but also appreciate their "enjoy life" attitude. They do take politics and soccer very seriously.

  • To "swear" at someone using their hands, Greeks put out their entire hand, palm open, like signaling someone to stop. This is called "mountza". Sometimes they will do this by saying "na"(here) as well. It is basically telling someone to screw off or that they did something totally ridiculous. "Mountza" is known to come from a gesture used in the Byzantine era.

  • Greeks smoke tremendously and they see cigarettes as a birthright. However, new laws are putting restrictions on smoking and awareness is growing about the risks of second-hand smoke. Don't be afraid to tell a cab driver or someone to put out the butt if it is bothering you... but they might bite back.

STAY HEALTHY

STAY HEALTHY

  • The country's pharmacies and medications are of top quality and pharmacies are highly-trained experts in their field. If you are looking for a specific medication, be sure to know its generic name, as brand names might be different. Most pharmacies close on Sundays, but a sign will be posted on the door indicating the nearest pharmacies that are open.

  • In late spring and summer, the Government reminds Greeks to wear their sunblock at the beach. The Mediterranean sun tends to get quite strong can burn skin. Any excessive daily sun exposure can also cause long-term damage to the skin.

  • There are no required inoculations for Greece and the water is perfectly safe. The tap water on some of the islands is desalinated seawater, which may taste awkward; locals on such islands prefer to drink bottled water, which is widely available throughout the country.
