Welcome to the Rainy City

The city of Bogor, also locally known as the Rainy City, lies about 60km south of Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. Bogor is known as residential and educational city. There are significant population of Bogor who commute to Jakarta daily via the main toll road available, Jagorawi (Jakarta - Bogor - Ciawi).

The Jungle

A water theme park

Recently a new water theme park has just been opened in Bogor. It's called: "The Jungle." The location of the theme park is in a new development area, Nirwana. The nice thing about this place is that it is located very near to the center of the city.

When we first visited this place, it was just soft launched. Already, the place is crowded by Bogorians and people from the surrounding areas.

The area of The Jungle is not that big, but inside it has a pretty good collection of attractions. The center of its attraction is a giant bucket of water which its content in quite loudly. The suspense is added by a bell ringing a few seconds before the bucket tip over.

One other unique attraction is a fountain futsal arena. This is where you can show your ball control skill with additional challenge, spray of water in your face.

Water theme park is not new for Bogorians. A short drive away to Cibubur or Pondok Indah, Jakarta, will take you to a similar entertainment area. One thing to differentiate this with the others is the inclusion of a 4D cinema. At the time of our visit, the cinema was not yet ready.

They are also building a new hotel just nearby the theme park within the housing complex. This hotel will be opened soon.

A video about "The Jungle" can be found below.

Bogor Botanical Garden (Kebun Raya Bogor)

http://www.bogor.indo.net.id/kri/

The Bogor Botanic Garden, Indonesia's first and foremost botanical garden, is 87 hectares of beautifully kept trees, plants flowers, lawns and ponds within a busy expanding city of 300,000 people. It is also a world famous institution for research and conservation that has developed over many years and is continuing to do so. The garden is an important part of Bogor city providing not only employment but a large recreational area for local residents, visitors from Jakarta and many passing tourists.

The Presidential Palace (Istana Bogor)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Istana_Bogor

Adjacent to the Botanical Garden, there lies the Presidential Palace. This impressive looking structures is off limit to general public. Historically, the building was used as a resting palace by the Dutch colonial government. Now, the palace is used for special presidential events. APEC meeting in 1995 was held in this place.

Safari Zoo (Taman Safari)

http://www.tamansafari.com/

If you are into nature and animals, just a short drive away toward Puncak, about 10km from Bogor, you will be able to find Taman Safari (Safari Zoo). I find this always a popular place for my guests with kids.

This is the only zoo in Indonesia, where the animals are let roam free and you drive your car amongst the animals. The collection of the animals varies from the common apes, monkeys, to the exotic Komodo Dragon, Babi Rusa and others.

In the central area, there is a children petting zoo and a huge bird cage. Also, there is a theme park and several animal shows that run on a regular schedule. Children have the the opportunity for their picture taken with tiger and orang utans.

Attractions are all inclusive with the entrance ticket, rides you have to pay extra.

Where to Eat?

Makan dimana?

Bogor is known as the weekend destination by Jakartans. During weekends, traffic are dominated by Jakarta plated cars. Mostly people come for the fresh air and the numerous eating locations that are spread around in Bogor.

One of the popular place to eat is the Sukasari area on Siliwangi Street, also known by the locals as "Obor" (named after a shop that used to rent out eating space to the street vendors). There are numbers of choices to eat here. The norm is look for the vendor that you like, and then to sit in any one of the number of stores that provide seating, and order from the waiter there.

See here (photos by Flickr user turniptopia) for some pictures on Bogor Sukasari area.

This article (in Indonesian) speaks in length about Bogor's eating places.

Ski? in Bogor?

If Bandung for clothing and snacks, then Bogor is sinonymous with shoes and bags shopping and eating. Why not combine both?

Nobody knows when this phenomena started, but in the past few years there are numerous factory outlets and cafetaria opening in Bogor. Each are competing to offer a "one stop shopping".

While others provide a cafe or foodcourt service, one particular shop, a little out of the way at Katulampa area, SKI, is offering a combination of restaurant, outbound activities, and what else, bag and shoes shopping. There are plenty of good deals and choices are many, for the foods and the bags.

The Gong Show

The Sukarna Gong Factory, a small workshop, frequented by foreigners, somehow this place is a bit thin on the domestic tourists. This factory is located on Jalan Panacasan.

Gong is a metal made traditional music instrument. It is commonly used in javanese and sundanese musics. Public and private ceremonies and even churches uses gong as part of their events.

The Mosque with the Golden Roof

Depok houses the well known University of Indonesia, also has another icon located near the center of the city. It's a beautiful mosque with a golden roof. The roof is made of 18 carat gold, rumored to be weighted at 2 tons. Yup, that's 2,000 kg of gold.
The mosque started to be built on a 100 hectares land in 2001 and finished in 2006.

The mosque is owned by a private individual, Hj Dian Djuriah Maimun Al Rasjid, an oil businessman from Banten.
