Take a exotic vacation on the wonderful island of Jamaica

Jamaica is an island nation of the Greater Antilles,
234 kilometres (145 mi) in length and as much as 80 kilometres (50 mi) in width situated in the Caribbean Sea. It is about 145 kilometres (90 mi) south of Cuba.
The head of state is Queen Elizabeth II, who officially uses the title "Queen of Jamaica" when she visits the country or performs duties overseas on Jamaica's behalf. Jamaica's current Constitution was drafted in 1962 by a bipartisan joint committee of the Jamaican legislature.

Jamaica is the fourth largest island in the Caribbean, and the most populous English-speaking island in that region. The island of Jamaica is home to the Blue Mountains inland, and is surrounded by a narrow coastal plain. Most major towns and cities are located on the coast. The climate in Jamaica is tropical, with hot and humid weather, although higher inland regions have a more temperate climate.

Beaches of Jamaica

Many islanders say that the beaches in Jamaica are the closest thing to heaven on earth. Following are some places where you can luxuriate in your own small slice of paradise.

Jamaica has hundreds of miles of beautiful coastline. The beaches of Jamaica are some of the finest in the Caribbean. Some Jamaica beaches are lively, fun-filled places, packed with young sunbathers listening to loud reggae music, other beaches in Jamaica are serene, secluded stretches of white sand perfect for relaxing and unwinding.

There are top Jamaica beaches in or near all the major resort towns. The long, crescent-shaped Turtle Beach in Ocho Rios is one of the most popular beaches in Jamaica. Like many other Jamaican beaches, it is now surrounded by hotels and resorts. For a more secluded beach in Ocho Rios, try the in-town Island Village Beach or nearby Reggae Beach, a few miles east of town.

The most historic of the beaches in Jamaica though is perhaps Doctor's Cave Beach in Montego Bay. It is recorded that in the 1920's, Sir Herbert Barker, an English osteopath, visited the beach and was impressed by the curative powers of the waters.

Jamaica Yesterday and Today

Ever since Errol Flynn came to Jamaica in the 1930's travellers have regarded Jamaica as one of the most alluring of the Caribbean islands. Its beaches, mountains and carnal red sunsets regularly appear in the sort of tourist brochures that promise paradise.

Unlike other nearby islands, it caters to everyone from beach bums to newlyweds: you can choose a private villa with your own secluded beach; laugh your vacation away at a party-hearty resort; or throw yourself into the thick of the island's life while experiencing the three Rs: reggae, reefers and rum.

Jamaica has some great history, Jamaica, immediately to the south of Cuba, is the third largest of the Caribbean islands. It was sighted by Columbus in 1494 but the name is of Amerindian origin. Becoming independent in 1962, it is a constitutional monarchy with the queen as head of state, and a member of the Commonwealth. Under Spanish occupation, the Arawak population was decimated. During Cromwell's regime, it was seized by the English under William Penn in 1655. Jamaica gained full internal self-government in 1959 and became an independent country within the British Commonwealth in 1962. In the late 20th century the government, led by Michael Manley, nationalized many businesses.

Jamaica's Economy

Jamaica's most important export crop is sugarcane, from which rum and molasses are also made. The nation's other agricultural exports include the famed Blue Mt. coffee, bananas, citrus fruits, and yams. Most of these crops are grown on large plantations. Small farms also produce ginger, cocoa, pimento, ackee, chickens, and goats. Mining is a major source of wealth; since large, easily accessible deposits of bauxite were discovered in 1942, Jamaica has become one of the world's leading suppliers of this ore. Along with the alumina made from it, bauxite accounts for almost half of Jamaica's foreign exchange.
Jamaican Government economic policies encourage foreign investment in areas that earn or save foreign exchange, generate employment, and use local raw materials. The government provides a wide range of incentives to investors, including remittance facilities to assist them in repatriating funds to the country of origin; tax holidays which defer taxes for a period of years; and duty-free access for machinery and raw materials imported for approved enterprises. Free trade zones have stimulated investment in garment assembly, light manufacturing, and data entry by foreign firms.

Weddings in Jamaica

Getting married in Jamaica is surprisingly affordable. A small and intimate Island ceremony can save you thousands over a traditional wedding at home. When you fly to Jamaica, you can eliminate the need for an elaborate, expensive sit-down dinner for a crowd of relatives you may not even know.
In so many parts of the world, an outdoor wedding could be a disaster. But in Jamaica, the weather is good year-round. It's never cold! Although it does rain, it's usually over before it really begins. The North Coast of Jamaica (Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, Negril and Port Antonio) offer the perfect climate for outdoor weddings.

After the wedding ceremony there is so much to do in Jamaica. You can parasail or windsurf or go deep-sea fishing. Snorkel or scuba. Play through on a championship golf course or play a game of tennis. Shop at the craft markets and eat in local jerk restaurants. Ride a bicycle down a country road. Discover secluded beaches or explore the back country with a native guide.

There are hundreds of options to choose from to host your wedding in Jamaica. While we were in Jamaica staying at Sandals Negril they were hosting about 6 weddings a day.

The Best Rum in the World

If you love rum than you have to admit that some of the best and smoothest rum is from Jamaica. Jamaicans use some of the most pristine mountain springs and underground aquifers of limestone filtered water are used for rum production. The success of the rum production in Jamaican motivated many of the other English as well as French and Dutch colonies in the region to begin experimenting with distilling sugar cane juice.

To make rum, molasses, the thick syrup resulting from sugar cane juice crystallised by boiling, is allowed to ferment. The resultant "wash" has approximately 6% lcohol, which after distillation produces rum as a sharp-tasting, clear, colourless liquid with about 80% alcohol. White rum (popular on the local arket) is basically this product diluted to 40% alcohol. Golden rums come from the ageing of the clear liquid in oaken casks and the
absorption of the liquid from the oak. The darker, heavier Jamaican rums come from combinations of molasses and skimmings from the sugar boiling vats stored in oaken casks. The fermentation of other substances in the molasses can enhance a rum's flavour and aroma.
Jamaican and other full-bodied rums are matured in large casks (111.6 gallons) called "puncheons" and distilled between 140º and 160º proof in pot stills a practice that dates back to the 17th century. Today the more modern light column stills are used. Full-bodied rums rely on natural or what is called "wild" fermentation rather than the cultured yeast inoculation (the yeast comes from the air and the raw material) used in light-bodied rums.
