Don't carry a year's supply of shampoo all over Europe.

I love to travel. I don't like to carry heavy bags. It makes no sense "to get away from it all" and then try to "carry it all with you." You'd be surprised to know how little you actually need to take with you on any trip, business or pleasure.

Let me show you how to hop on a plane without even checking the luggage allowance because you're not even close. Take the family in a van that doesn't look like the city dump. Where you can actually put your feet on the floor.

You should be able to pack for a week in one carry-on bag. You should be able to lift that bag into an overhead compartment without having to ask two linebackers for help. You should be able to tour Europe (or anywhere) for two weeks with one medium sized bag and one carry-on.

Here are some ways to cut down and not get there missing something you need.

Packing Tips

To make your trip lighter

1. Decide if you like black or navy and take one. Not both.
2. Khaki is great. It goes with everything.
3. Check out the online stores that sell travel clothing. You can get great looking stuff that packs small, doesn't wrinkle, dries fast.
4. If you aren't picky about your shampoo, conditioner, soap, or lotion, don't pack them. Hotel rooms always provide them.
5. Get a packing envelope and a packing cube (I like the ones made by Eagle Creek.) It's incredible how much stuff you can put in one and it makes finding things in your suitcase neat and easy.
6. Limit yourself to 3 pairs of shoes. Two is even better, if you can manage it.

For plane trips:
7. Get some 3 oz. plastic bottles with screw tops for your liquids. That's the most the airlines will let you take.
8. In your carry-on put: a change of clothing, including underwear, trip itinerary, all your medicines and toiletries, all liquids and gels should be in a 1 quart zip lock bag.

For travel in Europe:
9. Take a thin face cloth. Your hotel may not provide them.

10. Shop the "travel-size" bins at places like Walmart, Bed,Bath and Beyond, Target, and most pharmacies. One small toothpaste is good for about one week.
11. Get individual foil packs of insecticide, aspirin, nail polish remover, and towelettes.
12. Find some really tiny containers and fill them with things like eye makeup remover, cologne.
13. Don't stress over things you might be forgetting. They have stores almost everywhere.

And remember:
Your clothes are NEW to everyone you meet on vacation--except your own family and they don't care.
