Buying a travel trailer will save you a lot of money compared to buying new as trailers depreciate quickly. If you're looking to get the most for your money then a used trailer is the best option.
Search for your trailer in:
1. your local classified ads
2. a used trailer dealer or trailer consignment
3. Craigslist.org
4. EBayMotors.com
eBay Motors or Craigslist is probably where you will find the best bargains if you shop wisely.
Here are some tips for buying a used trailer on eBay:
1. Check to see if there are some trailers near your area first. Go to eBayMotors Advanced Search, then if you want you can go to the first box:
What are you looking for? and choose either RVs and Campers or Other Vehicles and Trailers OR you can scroll down to the search box and enter a keyword, Fleetwood trailer, for example. If you want to refine your search further choose one of the categories AND a keyword.
Tip: Surprisingly, many sellers don't use important keywords such as 'travel trailer' This may work to your advantage if you leave out the keywords and just browse the categories.
Also be sure to look in both categories mentioned above as you will find travel trailers in both.
While still in the Advanced Search area scroll down to Items near me - here you can enter your zip code or select by a popular city. On this page the nearest you can search is within 500 miles. Once you click the Search Button you will then be taken to the results page. If you want to search for trailers closer than 500 miles then look on the left hand column, scroll down a bit to Search Options, under that you will see Location, you will see under that a box checked Items within 500 miles, in the drop down box for miles click the new search criteria, i.e. 100 miles. This is a good way to find trailers closer to you if you don't want to travel too far to buy one.
On the other hand, if distance doesn't matter then in the Advanced Search page leave the Items Near Me option unchecked.
2. If you find a travel trailer you're interested in you will then want to Look carefully at the sellers feedback. Check the rating and read the feedback comments. Are these comments from sellers or buyers? i.e. has this seller ever sold anything before or is all of the feedback from things this person has bought on eBay? What have they sold in the past? Have they sold other high dollar items?
3. Contact the Seller. Under Meet the Seller in the top right of the auction you will see a link Ask Seller a Question. Ask Questions, get the sellers phone number, expect the seller to provide details and communicate in a timely manner. Ask the seller to fax you a copy of the title and maintenance records.
Tip: Be sure to always contact the seller thru ebay's contact system rather than private email to protect against any fraud.
4. Read the auction details carefully so that you know exactly what you're bidding on.
5. Use Escrow.com, it's a small price to pay to insure you and the seller are both satisfied with the transaction.
6. Pay with Paypal or a credit card. Don't pay in cash unless it's in person and don't pay with Western Union or other wire transfer.
Finally, eBay offers Buyer Services and Protection, including up to $20,000 in Vehicle Purchase Protection, as well as financing, inspections and more.
Happy bidding! Now go find that travel trailer and take a nice long vacation because you deserve it :)
