Blister Treatment

Blisters, also known as bulla, cold sore or herpes, are identified as another defense mechanism of the human body. It is formed when various bodily liquids gather between layers of skin as they separate and grow back.

A person's feet is the most commonly affected by blisters and it usually has to do with the wrong choice of footwear. It may also be caused by wearing the wrong socks and could be a symptom or effect of burns, frostbite, and friction.

Treating Blisters While Keeping It Intact

Many people suggest that blisters should be kept intact as much as possible when treating it although whether or not this should be strictly followed is still debatable. Intact blisters provide the human body natural and reasonably effective defense against bacterial infection.

To treat blisters while keeping it intact, just cover the affected area with an adhesive bandage. Next, place a larger, plastic-coated, and porous gauze pad over it. The latter will be responsible for absorbing moisture and ensuring proper ventilation for your blister to heal as quickly as possible.

Relieving Blister Pain

If a blister is particularly hurtful, you can use the following suggestions to alleviate the pain and discomfort.

Cleansing - Sometimes, pain from blisters may be caused by accumulated dirt. Wash your hands thoroughly before cleaning the affected area with warm water and soap. Exert only gentle pressure to minimize the pain.

Medication - You can also use alcohol or iodine to treat your blisters. You can use either a cotton swab or Q-tip to apply the medication. Antibiotic ointments may also be used for treating blisters but only if they've been punctured. Upon application, make sure to cover your blisters with gauze pads or adhesive bandages, too. Your local pharmacy is sure to have various OTC medications available for treating blisters.

Puncture - Another effective but somewhat painful way to relieve the discomfort caused by blisters is to simply puncture it. This will be discussed more later on.

Treating Blisters through Puncture or Popping

Puncture or popping is sometimes necessary if the pain caused by blisters has reached the point that it prevents you from walking properly or impairs your mobility in one way or another.

The first step is to purchase a needle and have it sterilized either by rinsing it with alcohol or holding its edge in the flame until it becomes red hot. Afterwards, clean the affected area completely. Once done, use the needle to make a small hole and then exert just the right amount of pressure to release the fluids stored in it.

Apply an antibiotic ointment such as bacitracin or polymixin. These will give your wound the protection it needs from bacteria since you've gotten rid of the natural barrier your body initially created for the same purpose.

Avoid removing the layer of skin over broken blisters as the layer of skin underneath it is still in the process of recovering.

When to Call the Doctor

Sometimes, blisters aren't just ordinary wounds. If you've punctured a blister and the fluid released from it isn't clear or has either a white or yellowish shade, this may be a sign of infection. Reddish or dark streaks surrounding the blister may also be another sign of infection. If you continue to suffer from pain caused by your blisters, you should then consider seeing a doctor a swell. If you are suffering from diabetes, you are not allowed to puncture your blister by yourself and require professional medical attention instead.
