The key to proper treatment of any illness or infection is first to understand the infection before deciding on the treatment to undertake. In this guide, I will be introducing the causes, symptoms and preventive measures when dealing with Onychomycosis and the top seven treatment for nail fungus available today.
What Is Onychomycosis?
Nail Fungus Infection is caused by fungi belonging to a group called Dermatophytes. These fungi thrive in warm, moist and humid conditions, making the inside of a shoe the best environment for their growth. However, simply airing out your shoes alone will not rid it of these fungi as they are hardy organisms created to survive in harsh conditions. Thus the only way to totally get rid of these Dermatophytes is to use anti-fungal sprays and powder. As the fungi grow and spread beneath ones nails, they will consume the keratin of the nail causing it to discolor and become brittle.
Infection mainly occurs more in the toenails than fingernails. This is because the toes are constantly confined inside a shoe, creating the ideal environment for fungal growth. The diminished blood supply to the toes also make it more difficult to cure than fingernails.
Symptoms Of Nail Fungus Infection
The symptoms of Nail Fungus Infection varies from one person to another but they basically share most of the following characteristics:1) Thickening of the nails.
2) The nails becoming brittle, crumbly or ragged.
3) The shape of the nail gets distorted.
4) A dull coloring to the nails and lacking lustre or shine.
5) Darkening caused by build up of debris beneath the nails.
6) The nail separates from the nail bed (also known as onycholysis).
7) Pain.
8) Foul odor.
How Does One Get Infected With Onychomycosis?
Nail fungus needs to be physically transmitted before it can cause an infection. This means that you would need to be in physical contact with a surface that has these Dermatophytes in order to get infected. These fungi would invade the body through either minute cuts and bruises around the nail or even from the small separation between the nail and nail bed.The most common method of infection to the toenail is walking barefooted in public places such as swimming pools, lockers, public showers, etc.
A common method of infection to the fingernail is through gardening, especially if you handle the soil or compost with your bare hands.
Sharing the manicure tools, shoes or gloves of someone who has nail fungus infection can transmit the fungus to your own nails.
If one toenail is infected, it can quickly spread to the other toenails if the foot is confined within ones shoes all day.
Finally, touching an infected nail with your bare hands will transmit the fungus to your fingernails.
While these are not the only ways nail fungus infection can be transmitted, they are the most common methods. Understanding how your own infection started will help greatly not only in the treatment of nail fungus but also to prevent it from recurring in the future.
Preventing Nail Fungus Infection
Prevention is always better than cure. Even if your nails are already infected by nail fungus, taking these preventive measures will ensure that it does not spread while you try out the nail fungus home remedies.1) Always keep your nails short, clean and dry. Trim your nails straight across and file any parts that have thickened.
2) Thoroughly wash your hands and feet everyday and dry them. For your feet, use anti-fungal foot powder to absorb moisture and kill fungus that might have attached itself. As an alternative, you can also use cornstarch.
3) Select appropriate socks to use. Synthetic socks work better at absorbing moisture than cotton or wool, which also tends to make your feet more sweaty. Change your socks everyday.
4) Make sure that your shoes are not tight. Occasionally throughout the day, take off your shoes to allow your feet to breathe. When at home consider using open toed sandals instead of shoes.
5) When handling soil, compost or debris, always use a pair of dry rubber gloves. When not in use, turn the gloves inside out to dry them out.
6) Don't go barefooted in public places, especially where the surfaces are damp or wet.
7) Always visit a reputable manicure and pedicure saloon. Even better, bring your own pedicure tools and do not share them with anyone else.
8) Give up nail polish. You may want to hide your embarassing nails beneath a coat of bright red but what you are actually doing is trapping unwanted moisture beneath the nails which will encourage fungal growth.
7 Top Nail Fungus Home Remedies Available Today
Here are 7 of the most highly recommended nail fungus home remedies today. These nail fungus cures have been tried by people who have once suffered from Onychomycosis and swear to its effectiveness. But the point to note is that we are all built differently, so what will work great for one person might not work too well for others. The key here is not to give up but to try them individually until you find that one treatment for nail fungus that works for you.1) Topical Treatments. A topical treatment for nail fungus is able to target the infection dead on and provide a remedy that will give you the highest chance of success at the fastest possible time. The best topical treatment for nail fungus today is the ZetaClear Nail Fungus Relief, which is a blend of several herbs that are proven to cure nail fungus fast.
2) Vinegar. Some studies have shown that vinegar inhibits bacterial growth, thus it is said that a vinegar soak can do the same for nail fungus. Mix 1 part vinegar to 2 parts warm water and soak your nails for about 15 to 20 minutes. Pat your nails dry after that.
3) Vicks Vaporub. While there are no clinical tests to prove its effectiveness against nail fungus, lots of people swear that applying a dab of Vick Vaporub to an infected nail will cure it. But a word of caution, this product was never made to be used like this so try this out carefully.
4) Tea Tree Oil is an excellent treatment for nail fungus because it is a natural antiseptic. Mix some undilluted Tea Tree Oil with a few drops of Olive Oil and apply it to the affected nail.
5) For healthy nails, you can soak them in some Listerine Mouthwash.
6) Mix some apple cider vinegar to warm water and soak your nails in the mixture for between 15 to 20 minutes.
7) Dab a mixture of Tea Tree Oil and Lavender Oil to the infected nails using a cotton ball about 3 to 4 times a day.

- Leave the cuticles and skin around your nails alone! Do not pick at it or pull hangnails or damage this protective skin. If you choose to frequent a nail salon it is important to make sure they always practice good hygiene, sanitation and sterilization methods. Nail salons are largely responsible for the major spread of nail fungal infections.
