Treatment for Rotator Cuff Injuries Can be Confusing
However, assuming you are sure this is a rotator cuff injury you are often left with a few different options given by doctors:
- Rest
- Drugs
- Surgery
- Physiotherapy
What is best though? A combination ... or is there another way?
Options for Treatment of Rotator Cuff Injuries

Rest
Many doctors if they feel that the injury is not too severe will usually tell you to rest your shoulder for a sometimes and it will right itself. While this can be the case the length of time is often badly misjudged and some people will only go on to injure it again if they do not also take further actions. While you will need to not exert yourself JUST resting on its own is long and painful and not guaranteed with success either as many shoulder injuries linger long past their used by date ...
Drugs
Injections, anti-inflammatory, pain killers oh my! Drugs will never actually HEAL a rotator cuff injury they simply make the pain easier to deal with. This can make resting more comfortable at times but can also make people think they are better before they actually are. Many doctors prescribe drugs only if someone is in pain but do not go further to actually heal the pain for good!
Surgery
If your injury is sufficiently sever your doctor may recommend surgery as treatment for a rotator cuff problem at the opposite end of the spectrum to simple rest! While sometimes this may be necessary many a rotator cuff injury has been treated without surgery for the better. Any surgery can have complications and is not guaranteed with success either. Unless your doctor knows you have major problems in your shoulder that desperately need you to go under the knife this must be considered carefully.
Physiotherapy
This is probably the best solution. A physiotherapist has many ways of being able to train you to exercise and stretch to promote natural healing and recovery to many shoulder injuries. No drugs, no surgery and you can take a pro-active approach to speed things along. There is one catch though ... they are horrendously expensive! I had no insurance and no money when i needed my shoulder treated so this was a painful option.
Well ... is there anything else?
Self-Physiotherapy
What physiotherapists do is not magic, it can be learned by anyone. Granted physios are excellent at what they do and have a wide range of knowledge will beyond the shoulder, if it is a rotator cuff injury you can learn the exercises and techniques they will do by yourself to apply at home for free!
