TreeLove on Squidoo!! Celebrate Earth Day, Conservation & more...

Welcome!

TreeLove!

What is it?

"TreeLove" started last year as a response to a call for Earth Day related artwork. Around the same time, I was also thinking about designs for an all inclusive symbol to use on signs in the forest, mostly centered around a "Don't Cut the Trees!" theme.

On an evening visit to the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, it dawned on me. On the cover of my sketchbook, I penned the very simple tree inside the heart design. I later refined this into the design you see above. The term "treelove" is a simple play on the phrase "free love".

There is no exact definition of TreeLove - it includes many values. For myself, TreeLove is about basic, common sense care and concern for the environment. It is about not only knowing your place and effect in your own local environment, but also having proper knowledge and concern about global effects on our fragile planet.

Sure, this is still very broad, but folks know what I mean..."TreeLove" comes in many different forms! Please think about how you can practice more "TreeLove" and also share this with someone else! If everyone who reads this shares it with just ONE other person, together, we can spread the TreeLove!

Ways YOU can Spread the TreeLove!

Things you can do for Earth Day or Everyday...

  1. Buy and plant trees from your local conservation agency. (I bought 300 scotch pine seedlings from my county conservation agency to be used as wedding favors in july!)
  2. Volunteer for an outdoor clean-up. Spring is the time of year when many places have cleaning days (there are many all year however) - parks and rec, rivers/watershed/conservation agencys, your local church, etc. Look in your local paper or yellow pages.
  3. If you are unable to physically volunteer, if possible, make a donation to an earth friendly charity. Profit from this lens supports Earthjustice, so click on some links!
  4. Turn off your water!! No, not off-off...but, start paying attention to how much you run the water needlessly during activities such as dishes, personal hygiene, etc. Also things like car washing and lawn watering could be considered excessive use of water.
  5. Switch the bulbs in your home to energy efficient lightbulbs.
  6. Maintain your car engine! Regular oil changes, filter replacements and other maintainance can help increase gas milage and will keep your vehicle running cleaner, longer.
  7. Recycle. Some things you recycle can make you some extra cash. Check with your local trash authority.
  8. Use reusable shopping bags. Plastic shopping bags take forever to biodegrade and they are an unsightly and unwanted addition to nature!
  9. More to come...

If You MUST Use Plastic...

Because sometimes plastic bags are just unavoidable...

The convenience of plastic shopping bags makes them difficult to give up, as does the fact that you get them nearly everywhere these days. Plastic shopping basg are extremely handy for everyday duties, so save 'em and re-use 'em:
  • Litterbox Duty is my favorite method of plastic shopping bag re-use. Scoop your used litter into a bag with no holes, knot it up and throw it in the trash. Of course, if you are a dog person...
  • The Pooper Scooper - plastic shopping bags are light and easy to stuff in your pocket for walks with your pooch. Remember, check before you leave home to make sure you get bags with no holes!
  • Mini Trashcan Liner - use plastic shopping bags as a liner for your smaller waste cans at home, office or in the car. When it's full, it is convenient to remove - no muss, no fuss, just toss!
  • Lunchbag - Take your lunch in a plastic shopping bag. When you're all finished, you can put your trash conveniently in this bag. Great for hiking, biking, picnicing, etc...
  • More to come...

Great Green Ideas

Some green ideas and innovations that I just love!
Lose the Suit, Save the Planet
The Province of Ontario, Canada is urging its office workers to "go-casual" for the entire summer. Workers can wear cooler clothes and thus the air conditioning does not have to be used as much, cutting down on power use, emissions, etc.
