Trees Of Mystery

On Historic Hwy. 101, a blind driver would be able to see the hulking sculpture of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox.

What have you just witnessed?

Here in Klamath California several mysteries await you, Paul Bunyan being the least.

Welcome to the Trees of Mystery!

Paul Bunyan & Babe the Blue OX

A Tribute To A Giant

Pulling up to the Trees Of Mystery a greeting is heard from one of America's best known giants - Paul Bunyan!

Believe it or not Paul isn't afraid to say hello. Out of the sculpture a booming voice reigns down asking you to sit a spell on his shoe while he greets the other visitors sometimes by name!

It wouldn't be Paul Bunyan at all without Babe the Blue OX!

Standing valiantly beside Paul Bunyan is his trusted companion and partner in crime aka Big Blue!

Paul, constructed in 1961 a year before the Century 21 Exposition World's Fair in Seattle, has stood his ground at the entrance to the Trees of Mystery ever since.

Babe, constructed in 1949 originally had a moving head and blew smoke out its nostrils.

Allegedly the smoke blowing scared the children so it was discontinued. And in 1983 when Babe was moved, the head movement was stopped for the time being by the bracing being installed.

As of 2007 Babe's head has yet to budge!

On the way out of the interpretive trail your treated to the woodcarvings detailing the life of Paul Bunyan & friends!

Trees Of Mystery

Some interesting trees indeed

For over fifty years this park has amazed many.

The 8/10th of a mile of trail is delight and offers a respite from the drive.

After the visit to Paul Bunyan and a walk through redwood log the trail to the trees of mystery await!

Among many of the trees that were left by the loggers sport names such as the Brotherhood Tree, (pictured right), The Cathedral tree, & Elephant tree among others.

By some act of nature many of the trees have been distorted through time. Some may look like a double helix intertwining others may have the odd giant burl.

Some of these trees are truly amazing! It's not often that sites such as these are reveal to human eyes.

The notion comes to mind why this doesn't happen more frequently and more often maybe it does and more mystery will eventually be revealed.

Thankfully there are several mysterious trees to take a look at here.

Take for instance The World's Largest Family Tree.

The Worlds Largest Family Tree so dubbed by all of the candelabras of individual trees growing from its branches.

This nurse tree certainly wants to keep her brood close by.

Each branch of this nurse tree supports several other young trees upon her boughs.

The Sky Trail!

A little gondala amonst the giants!

The experience isn't quite complete until you take a gondola and venture up to take a good look at the forest below.

The forest below is a new growth redwood forest, as the area was once logged for the ancient tree.

This attraction has been carrying passengers to a scenic overlook since 2001.

Atop this overlook you can see the old growth redwood stands of red mountain, or peer to the pacific ocean and set your eyes upon hidden beach.

Imagine what it would be like to take this gondola amongst the redwood giants in another 100 years. Phewww! Awesome.

Pretty darn cool... I love roadside oddities so I'm planning to visit your other lenses. I've been to the museum in front of the Trees of Mystery, but haven't been inside the gate to see the trees themselves.

This is an excellent lens about one of my favorite places! May I assume it's OK to feature it on My lens about Crescent City (only 21 miles north of the Trees of Mystery)?
