Back to the Basics of Fun: Tree Swings

I have 4 kids that are old enough to head out in the backyard an romp and stomp around. They have all kinds of light sabers, bikes, a trampoline, ipods, ipads, Nintendo DS and the list goes on and on...any sometimes, even with all these mordern toys and games, they are still looking for something to do. I am here to help put an end to all the whining and complaining that there is nothing to do. The solution is simple. Around our house, the most laughs and uncontrollable bursts of joy come from a piece of rope, tied to a branch with something to sit on. Simple as that. The ClassicTree Swing.

The Simple, Yet Fun Disc Swing

A Sure Bet

Having trouble finding the right swing?

My wife looked several different places for a tree swing and did not have any luck. We had a tougher time tracking one down than we thought we would. So, here is our effort to help have a tree swing in every backyard around the world. Or at least yours.

These are the classic disc swings. That is what we went with and I think we are in our third year. It was worth every penny.

Toddler Tree Swings

Not quite ready for the disc swing?

Our youngest just turned 1 and is not quite able to sit on the disc swing and hold on for the ride. So, we got him a swing that is a bit more his speed. He absolutely loves it. Toddler and Infant tree swings are soothing and our little one has dozed off a few times in his. He loves it. Here are a few like what we got for the youngest, we have the Little Tikes 2 n 1 Snug and Secures. Works great. You will want to check the suggested ages, make sure everyone is safe.

Do Kids Spend too Much Time Indoors Today

When I was growing up, we were outside after breakfast and stayed out on bikes, at the park, playing basketball, or creating adventures in the woods near our house. Our parents had to drag us in at dark.

Do you think kids spend too much time indoors playing video games and watching TV?

Without a doubt, get them outside and let them get dirty

I really ruff these outdoor swings !

jcamdenbow says:

i grew up the same way. In the summer us kids would even eat breakfast earlier than normal so we could go out and play. We always waited till Mom called us at dark and then we would come running.

Video Games and TV help them develop their minds

Tree Swings in Action

Warning: Try this at Home

One of the most requested outdoor fun activities is an "Underdog" on the Tree Swing. You begin the underdog by usually pushing from the back. It is done on the count of 3 pushes, on the third push, the pusher runs all the way underneath the person on the swing to give them maximum height.

This is a tame example of an Underdog, in fact it is a reverse underdog. You usually push from the back and you have a lot more height and velocity.

Entertaining children can be as simple as entertaining yourself and letting them hang with you. Kids don't have our resources, or abilities, but they do have great imaginations. If you simply combine everyone's ideas, skills and money, who knows what you can come up with. One day camping at Timothy Lake my son said let's build a swing set to swing out over the water. I thought, great all we need is a long rope and a leaning tree over deep water and you got it. (Travel itineraries, advice, discounts, articles, may be read at TripTalkusa ) The rope was no problem since I was in the habit of bringing everything including the kitchen sink with us camping. The leaning tree posed a problem since the lake has no leaning trees. We took our little 12 foot aluminum boat across the lake to find a tree we could bring back. On this discreet cloak and dagger mission was an adult (questionable) an 8 year old and a 5 year old, a tippy Sears and Roebucks rowboat with a 2hp outboard, a small but razor sharp survival saw and a bunch or rope and twine.

This brings back so many memories as a child growing up. I would swing all day long if Mom would have let me. But there were chores to be done and other things. I never missed an opportunity to swing.
