Optimising Sports Performance with Trehalose
To perform at any level in sports you need to have adequate glucose in you blood stream and muscles to sustain the level of activity. Too little and you just can't perform and too much and you'll feel awful. Elite athletes learn how to ensure they have the right levels at the right time, that's why they load with starchy foods just before the race.
Trehalose, being a slow and controlled release carbohydrate, is now being incorporated into sports programmes all over the world.

Benefits of Trehalose in Sports
There are many benefots of Trehalose and these are a few for the dedicated sportsman or woman:
- Trehalose doesn't trigger a rise in blood glucose levels meaning you have better energy release for longer without the crashes
- Trehalose tastes great on its own so you can just mix it with water and rehydrate with water and trehalose while you run. We recommend starting with about 1 tablespoon/litre of water and adjust from there based upon what you are doing
- It may surprise you to learn that Trehalose also protects nervous system tissue from free radical damage
What is Trehalose Like

Trehalose is a white granular powder a bit like caster sugar and doesn't grab water out of the air and go lumpy so stays free running.
Trehalose is Available in the UK
Sports Performance Drinks
There are currently very few sports performance drinks that contain Trehalose. I was shocked when I saw that Lucozade Sport contained chemicals known to be harmful (Aspartame, Acesulfame K). The best way to use Trehalose is to use it with water or your normal simple Sports Performance Drink.

Sports Study
One study, published in the European Journal of Applied Physiology in 2003, compared the effects of three sugar solutions (glucose, galactose and trehalose) on performance and blood sugar levels in eight well-trained male cyclists. The beverages were consumed just before 20 minutes of low-intensity cycling followed by a timed trial of all-out effort.
Performance was comparable with all three sugars, but blood glucose levels rose and fell more gently with trehalose and galactose.
Prolonged energy availability
'Trehalose is an ideal energy source, prior to, during and after exercise'
Trehalose is a suitable sugar to be taken during exercise and results in significant performance enhancement compared to placebo8. A similar level of performance is seen when compared to glucose but without the insulin surge associated with glucose. In fact, when trehalose was given, the insulin response throughout the exercise study was lower than with glucose. This is beneficial, as there is less interference with fat mobilisation, which provides an alternative source of energy.
Trehalose empties more quickly from the stomach than either glucose or maltose, in the first 60 minutes after consumption, indicating it is rapidly available to the body.
Trehalose is well tolerated, even at high levels of intake (96g)there have been no reports of intestinal disturbance.
