Turning Pain into Gain...
We braved 40ºF. temps, snow and slush on the roads, and rude car drivers.
We experienced sore bottoms, exhausted legs, and aching backs.
We stopped eating sugary foods and started pumping in more veggies, quality proteins and whole grains.
We did all this because we were in training.
And now, we are in training again for 2009.
Our bikes have been tuned up and inspected and we're hitting the pavement several times a week because we're in training for...
The Trek Across Maine
For the American Lung Association
Every June the American Lung Association of Maine sponsors a fabulous 3-day marathon to raise money to fight lung disease. The event is called the the Trek Across Maine.
On June 19, 2009 over 2,000 riders of all ages will converge on Sunday River Ski Resort and then set out to ride 180 miles across the lovely, hilly state of Maine to the coast. Each rider will have raised at least $500 for the ALA of Maine - hopefully more!
We will ride roughly 60 miles per day and then camp in the evenings.
I, Sherry have mild asthma, several of our friends and/or their children have severe asthma, a dear friend died of lung cancer and Ken's aunt died of emphysema.
We have too many friends who are addicted to cigarettes and can't seem to quit, and every day we see and smell the pollution spewed from motor vehicles and from the giant chimneys of the paper mills.
We want to be a part of the solution, so in mid-June Ken and I are going to ride in the Trek with the hopes of raising $750 (or more) each to fight lung disease and air pollution.
Ta-Da! As Requested, Here's our Training Blog!
Tune in here to see how Ken and I are faring as we prepare:
Photos, victories, run-ins with rude drivers, road-blocks, dog bites, flat tires, sports injuries.
You'll learn everything you want to know (and then some!) about our training and our fundraising.

We Need Your Help!
A Dollar Here, A Dollar There.
Ken and I really need your help to reach our goals of Raising $750 each for the American Lung Association. You can make your tax deductable contribution online. It's simple and quick and you'll be helping me and literally millions of my fellow asthma sufferers.
Use our links below to make your tax deductible U.S. donation.
Ken and I are EACH required to raise at least $500, so you can donate to either or both of us. The money goes directly to the Maine division of the ALA, not to us. All we get out of the deal is sore muscles and the satisfaction of a job well done.
Donations should be made BEFORE June 13, 2009.
Thank you so much for your contribution!

Cigarette Smoking
The Number One PREVENTABLE Cause of Lung Disease
Here's an old song by Randy Stonehill. (Solid Rock 1976) The prices are a bit outdated, but the connection between tobacco and Lung Disease is not!Kool? I don't think so!
(And for you politically correct folk: the word "fag" is defined in the dictionary as a cigarette, so put your soapbox away!)
Lung Cancer
She went down to the corner store
And bought a pack of filter kings
Don't ya know tomorrow she'll be back for more
'Cause she really loves to smoke those things
And every time that she inhales a cloud of that cigarette smoke
She's just one step closer to the Man in Black
And 60¢ closer to broke (now it's more like $2.50!)
She's been workin' on Lung Cancer
Emphysema
A Cardiac Arrest
She'll probably have a stroke when she sees
The X-rays of her chest
When she had her first cigarette
a puff or two was all she could take
Now if she doesn't have one in her hand all the time
You'll notice she begins to shake
And even though she's non-chalant
And acts as if her habit's a joke
She won't do too much laughing when
Her life goes up in smoke
She's been smokin' that
C-I-G-A-R-E-T-T-E
That cigarette's got her on her knees
C-I-G-A-R-E-T-T-E
That darn tobacco won't set her free
Aw, suck, Baby, suck
Suck on that cigarette
Suck, Baby, Suck
Light up that fag and take a drag
It's bound to snuff you yet!

- I hope we will be involved on some level. If we're not riding we will probably be volunteering.
