Harem Pants - Hot Summer Trend

Whether you love them or loathe them, harem pants are making a come back and are set to be one of the hottest trends for the Summer. Both the London and New York based fashion houses have featured models gracing the catwalks wearing sexy harem pants and more recently, tennis ace Maria Sharapova, was seen wearing trendy Harem Pants to a Miami Beach party.

The shops are full of harem pants in various shapes and styles but can these loose fitting, low crotch trousers really be stylish? Would you be brave enought to wear them? Below I delve into the history and look at how to wear harem pants to help you make your mind up.

The History of Harem Pants

Harem Pants Originated in Persia

Harem pants originate from the Middle East as far back as the 16th century when there were two main powers in control, these being the Ottomans of Turkey and the Safavids of Persia. Their clothing was very similar in design and the overall outfit consisted of low crotch pants worn under closed tunics and open robes. Ottoman rule was very broad, reaching across the Middle East, Europe and North Africa and the styles worn by the Ottomans were introduced into the political areas that they ruled. Many illustrations show people, mainly men, wearing full pants which today we commonly refer to as harem pants. The Safavids took control of Persia and the silk trail and it was rumoured that harem pants originated here. The pants were full at the top, and down to the knee region and then tapered to the ankle. The full part was to make sitting down and general movements easier.

Harem Pants were made popular again in the early 20th century during the Orientalism Movement. Paul Poiret was very inspired by the Orient and Ballet Russes; from the jewel encrusted lampshade tunics to tapered harem pants. He encouraged women to remove themselves from the constrains of corsets and be less inhibited in exotic clothing.

Chic Harem Pants

Talitha Getty was pictured wearing an exceedingly chic pair of white harem pants on a Marrakech rooftop with her husband, John Paul Getty, at the beginning of 1969. It was a photograph that has since inspired countless designers to work some bohemian magic into their designs.

It is not stated where Talitha bought her chic harem pants but it could well have been Yves Saint Laurent, who was enthralled and inspired by her, describing her as a romantised wild child of Morocco.

How to Wear Harem Pants

silk harem pants

  1. Don't choose harem pants that are fussy or baggy in the middle divide. Choose a style that has less fabric in that area, especially if you are short, otherwise you will suffer with a balloon effect. There are a number of variations on the harem theme so keep trying until you find one that flatters your shape.
  2. Harem pants in light drapey fabrics are the most flattering. Try silk or cotton jersey.
  3. Set off the bagginess of the trouser with high-heels as these elongate the legs or alternatively some styles of harem pants look good with trendy gladiator sandals.
  4. Stay slim on top to counter-balance the fullness of the pants. Wear fitted tops, not baggy ones. If you are still struggling to put a look together, then maybe try a harem styled jumpsuit which works well.
  5. Choose pants that are cropped just below the knee for day-wear and go for longer styles (cropped just above the ankles) for night time.
