The Trevi Fountain, or Fontana di Trevi is a remnant of one of Rome's original ancient aqueducts
The Romans built aqueducts to bring water to the large cities - and some cities still use them!
At the time it was custom to build a glorious fountain at the end point of an aqueduct. According to legend Roman technicians enlisted the help of a virgin to find a source of pure water about 8 miles away from the city.
The Baroque period saw an explosion of design and construction which resulted in a number of famous buildings, fountains, and even the Spanish Steps. In 1730 Pope Clement XII held a design contest and Nicola Salvi was eventually chosen to build the Trevi Work began in 1732 and the fountain was completed in 1762.

The Trevi Fountain () is a fountain in the Trevi rione in Rome, Italy. Standing 25.9 meters (85 feet) high and 19.8 meters (65 feet) wide, it is the largest Baroque fountain in the city.
