The Trevi Fountain, or Fontana di Trevi is a remnant of one of Rome's original ancient aqueducts

The Romans built aqueducts to bring water to the large cities - and some cities still use them!

At the time it was custom to build a glorious fountain at the end point of an aqueduct. According to legend Roman technicians enlisted the help of a virgin to find a source of pure water about 8 miles away from the city.

The Baroque period saw an explosion of design and construction which resulted in a number of famous buildings, fountains, and even the Spanish Steps. In 1730 Pope Clement XII held a design contest and Nicola Salvi was eventually chosen to build the Trevi  Work began in 1732 and the fountain was completed in 1762.

While planning our trip to Rome we were beginning to panic about accommodations.

Friends booked a hotel online and were extremely disappointed by the reality of the place verses what the online photos showed.
