Download a fully compatible version of the audiobook Tribes for Free

Tribes, the latest Seth Godin book is available as an audiobook.

However the free Audible version is not compatible with some device and player.

So I've made some versions of this book that are truly compatible with any device and player.

Please note those links are perfectly legal.

At the end of this page I discuss the differences between the paper version and the audio version of the book Tribes.

Free Audiobook Tribes - We Need You To Lead Us as AAC and MP3 format

Created from the free Audible version

The Audible version of this audiobook is free. You have to register to Audible to download it (no credit card required as far as I know).
Audible is a great company and you should try it if you like listening books.

So here their official link:
http://www.audible.com/adbl/entry/offers/productPromo2.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&productID=FR_ADBL_000302

However here the catch: the Tribes audiobook works well only with iTunes.
Sadly it doesn't work well with all the players.
By example my 2nd gen iPod cannot read it.

So I created a more compatible version using Audio Hijack Pro

Download Tribes Audiobook - AAC version - 52MB (.m4a)
(note the file name has .m4a.bin extension otherwise the download doesn't work properly. Once the file downloaded, just rename it by keeping only the .m4a extension, then open it with Quicktime player or iTunes)

As some people have only MP3 players, I've also created an MP3 version. However it doesn't sound as good as the original (in fact when you need good MP3 sound quality use the LAME MP3 encoder, but not the loosy iTunes MP3 encoder).

Download Tribes Audiobook - MP3 version - 52MB (.mp3)

I've also tried an OGG version but the quality is poor and the size much bigger (70MB). So unless I found a better encoder I'm not publishing it.

Hope you will enjoy as much as I enjoyed this book.

What is the main benefit of listening the audiobook?

For me the main benefit of this audiobook is I've started doing things instead of talking endlessly about them.

Seth launched his book on Wednesday 22nd October 2008.

The slides have been published on Slideshare:
http://www.slideshare.net/sethgodin/seth-godin-on-tribes-presentation

Also the audio have been published by MarketingOverCoffee.com
http://www.marketingovercoffee.com/2008/10/23/seth-godin-on-tribes/

I discovered Marketing Over Coffee through this link and subscribed to their podcast as John Wall and Christopher Penn are very interesting. Thanks guys.

What needs to be done is to sync the sound with the slides, and also a transcript. Unless Seth release the video because many years from this event, that speech will still be valuable for many people.

However the website Triiibes.com is not open to the public and apparently will not be opened to the public.

On the meantime what is the benefit of the audiobook versus the paper book?

You can hear Seth! He's a great speaker.

However I found myself listening many times the same chapter.
I found difficult to focus on few hours straight listening an audiobook.

I think that's because an audiobook has to be designed from day one for the ears. But this one is a reading of a book designed for the eyes.

As the mediums are different, the perceptions as well.

So it wouldn't hurt to make a real audiobook version of Tribes.
A good audiobook is still very rare and I think the best one is "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" saga by Douglas Adams ... And that's certainly because it has been designed to be a radio show.

I think the main problem are the lists of this book.
Seth should convert them as audio material.
However what a list as audio material should sounds like?

That's the main reason for me the paper book is good because the lists works better visually than read aloud.

So I'm looking forward to put the paper book on my shelf too :-)

However you should read those lists aloud by yourself to improve your memory and understanding.

I found good practice before doing any intellectual / creative work to make my brain ready and fully available by having:
- a short nap (20 mn max) if I haven't slept well the 6-8 hours before.
- a bit of exercises involving balance, equilibrium.
